Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active New York bar admission in good standing.
  • Minimum of 7 years of trusts and estates/private client experience at a law firm, accounting firm, family office, or comparable environment.
  • Strong experience advising international clients and/or handling cross-border estate planning and administration matters is necessary.
  • Excellent drafting, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple matters and client relationships effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Advising high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families, and family offices on sophisticated estate, gift, generation-skipping transfer tax, and wealth preservation planning strategies, with a strong emphasis on international tax and cross-border planning considerations.
  • Counseling clients regarding federal and state transfer tax issues, wealth transfer techniques, and changing tax legislation.
  • Advising non-U.S. clients with respect to structures designed to keep wealth outside of the U.S. tax regime and working with non-U.S. counsel to implement related strategies.
  • Representing fiduciaries and beneficiaries in Surrogate's Court proceedings, including probate, administration, and related trust and estate matters.
  • Advising individual and institutional fiduciaries throughout the estate and trust administration process.
  • Reviewing and coordinating the preparation of federal and state estate tax, gift tax, and fiduciary income tax returns, including matters involving cross-border assets and international reporting issues.
  • Counseling clients on business succession planning, charitable giving strategies, and multigenerational wealth transfer objectives.
  • Collaborating with attorneys in the Firm's Corporate, Tax, Real Estate, Litigation, and Family Office practices to provide integrated advice to individuals, families, and closely held business owners, particularly in international and cross-border contexts.
  • Developing and maintaining strong client and professional advisor relationships, including accountants, financial advisors, trust officers, and family office professionals.
  • Participating in business development, thought leadership, and client education initiatives within the Private Clients practice.

Herrick is seeking a Senior Associate or Counsel with 7+ years of sophisticated trusts and estates experience and an expertise in international estate planning to join its Private Clients Department in New York. The ideal candidate will have significant experience advising high-net-worth individuals and families on estate planning, wealth transfer strategies, international and cross-border tax structuring, pre-immigration planning,and related trust, estate, and tax matters.

Candidates should possess excellent drafting, analytical, communication, and client relationship skills, and be comfortable managing matters independently while collaborating with attorneys across multiple practice areas. The range of base salary* the Firm reasonably expects to pay for this role is $275,000 to $375,000. The actual base salary for this role within the above range will depend upon years of experience, expertise, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

*This range does not include other forms of compensation or benefits that may be offered in connection with the job.
