State of Michigan’s MDOC is seeking a professional Prison Counselor to work in prison housing units and support treatment programs. The role evaluates inmate progress and maintains housing units in accordance with policy; it is a drug and alcohol randomly tested position (DART).
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and meet the department’s education and experience requirements, including progression from Prison Counselor 9 to P11 as described in the posting.

Position functions as a professional prison counselor in prison housing units, completing a variety of assignments to carry out the activities of a prison treatment program and the activities necessary to maintain a prison housing unit. Position evaluates prisoner’s behavior to determine progress made through treatment programs and maintains the housing unit in accordance with policy and procedure. This position is a drug and alcohol randomly tested position (DART).

Possession of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, school social work, social work administration, family relations, human services, or theology.
The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of the Public Acts of 1996.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in‑person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non‑custody new employee training. PLEASE NOTE: Training may require overnight travel.
Positions in this class are test‑designated and subject to pre‑appointment and random‑selection drug and alcohol testing.
