Job summary

State of Michigan's Department of Corrections is seeking a Prison Counselor to support housing unit operations, provide casework, and answer prisoners' questions as a resource for the inmate population.

The role works with RUM, sergeants, and Housing Unit Corrections officers to assess behavior and measure progress through treatment programs in compliance with policy. A bachelor's degree in a related field is required, with DOC experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field and one year of Department of Corrections experience.
• One year of professional experience in prison counseling or related corrections role.
• Public Act 140 prohibits hire of individuals with felony convictions or pending felony charges.

Responsibilities

• Provide prison counseling and case management to inmates.
• Assist prisoners with questions and act as a resource person for the inmate population.
• Collaborate with Housing Unit staff (RUM, sergeants, and corrections officers) to manage housing unit operations and monitor program progress.

Education

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, school social work, social work administration, family relations, human services, or theology

Bachelor's degree in any major + 1 year DOC experience

High school diploma + 1 year as Assistant Resident Unit Supervisor 11 or Corrections Shift Supervisor 11; or 2 years as listed; or 3 years as listed
