Job summary

Gateway Foundation Inc. is seeking a Prison-Based Counselor to provide evidence-based behavioral health services in a corrections setting.

The role includes group and individual therapy for offenders, discharge planning, and coordination with the MDOC system to meet contract requirements. The position requires a bachelor’s degree with relevant experience or a master’s degree with experience, Michigan licensure or eligibility, and the ability to work Monday through Friday, 2:00 PM–10:00 PM,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum two years’ experience OR Master’s degree and minimum one year of experience.
  • Experience in substance abuse field with counseling, assessment, treatment planning and group therapy; work with offender population.
  • Clinical licensure and/or certification in Michigan or eligibility to obtain per MCBCAP requirements.
  • Ability to follow MDOC directives and flexible scheduling.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team and to receive supervision feedback.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality maintains service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Provides group orientation, individual intake, comprehensive assessment, Mid-Program assessment and discharge planning including aftercare recommendations.
  • Documents treatment and discharge plans, client progress and responses to treatment; maintains related records and charts.
  • Provides evidenced-based group therapy for up to 15 offenders per group as per MDOC contract requirements.
  • Provides individual segregation discharges as needed for offenders in substance abuse services, per MDOC contract.
  • Adheres to MDOC policies with emphasis on safety, security and professional boundaries with offenders.
  • Navigate between internal eHealth record and MDOC reporting system.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 2:00PM-10:00PM

Prison-Based Counselors (Therapists) are responsible for:
  • Provides group orientation, individual intake, comprehensive assessment, Mid-Program assessment and discharge planning including aftercare recommendations, in accordance to MDOC contract requirements.
  • Documents treatment and discharge plans, and client’s progress and responses to treatment; and maintains related records and charts.
  • Provides Evidenced-Based group therapy for up to 15 offenders per group in accordance to MDOC contract requirements.
  • Provides individual segregation discharges as needed/approved for offenders terminated early from substance abuse services, in accordance to MDOC contract requirements and at the discretion of the correctional facility. Completion of reporting requirements.
  • Adherence to MDOC policies and procedures, with specific attention to safety and security, and maintenance of professional boundaries with offender population.
  • Ability to navigate between internal electronic health record and Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) system for reporting.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum of two years’ experience OR Master’s Degree and minimum of one year of experience
  • Experience in substance abuse related field, with specific skills in counseling, assessment, treatment planning and group therapy; working with offender population.
  • Clinical licensure and/or Certification in State of Michigan or ability to obtain this within designated timeframe specified through the Michigan Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP).
  • Ability to follow MDOC directives and remain flexible as needed to accommodate facility space and scheduling.
  • Ability to work independently and/or with team members as available.
  • Ability to receive and apply clinical supervision feedback as needed.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality to ensure consistent delivery of services
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk and move about the facilities for up to two hours at a time, to monitor and interact with clients
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and/or audit information and data
  • Ability to record, proofread and check documents and files for accuracyAbility to respond to telephones, and to hear and detect alarms and unusual noises
Compensation (based on experience and credentials) :
  • Range is between $22.00 - $30.00 per hour
  • Gateway Foundation conducts annual reviews including merit increases.
