Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Printing Press Helper for the 1st shift in Houston, TX. The role supports the operator with setup, operation, and cleaning of the printing press while suggesting process improvements.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, and preferred experience in the corrugated industry or press departments. The position requires attention to detail, ability to read measurements, and compliance with safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 6 months’ experience in the Press Department preferred.
• 6 months’ experience in the Press and Finishing Department preferred.
• Able to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy.
• Able to read factory masters and follow written instructions.
• Able to calculate figures such as percentages, measurement, volume, and rate.

Responsibilities

• Assist with set-up of rails, print, and die cut section according to setup techniques.
• Inspect dies before and after runs and ensure repairs are made as needed.
• Check bolts for cutting dies and ensure they are secure.
• Monitor box quality for issues like warp and incorrect size.
• Inspect anilox rolls for damage.
• Maximize equipment utilization by operating at available capacity and speed.
• Cross-train on other machines and assist with machine duties.
• Complete reports accurately (Production Data, Status, Safety, Quality).
• Adhere to production schedule and company safety policies.

Printing Press Helper – 1st shift ($16 to $19) Responsible for assisting the operator in all activities associated with running the printing press including setup, operation, cleanup, and recommending improvements to operations.

• Assist with set-up of rails, print, and die cut section on machine accurately in accordance with proper setup techniques
• Assist with inspecting all dies before and after running to ensure that any necessary repairs are made before the next run
• Help to ensure all bolts for cutting dies are in place and tightly secured
• Monitor box quality, including, but not limited to, loose liner, warp, correct size, and print
• Help check anilox rolls for damage
• Maximize the utilization of equipment by operating the machinery at available capacity and speed
• Assist with job duties on the machine
• Crosstrain on other machines
• Complete necessary reports in an accurate and timely manner, including but not limited to: Production Data, Machine Operational Status, Safety Data, Quality Data
• Switch duties with other helpers as necessary
• Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety and maintaining good housekeeping
• Adheres to production schedule.
• Learn relevant local and company requirements, rules and procedures. Strictly follows rules and guidelines and always uses the right procedure for the job. Promptly reports incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions or processes. SWR employees regardless of level, position or tenure are responsible for upholding the safety standards regulations and policies.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Prior work experience in the corrugated industry, preferred
• 6 months’ experience as a Press Department Helper, preferred
• 6 months’ experience in the Press and Finishing Department, preferred
• Able to read and follow instructions on factory masters
• Able to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy. Able to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurement, volume and rate. Able to apply concepts of high school math.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form. Ability to deal with problems involving one or more concrete variables in standardized situations.
• The individual must have a working knowledge of the following:
• Equipment design and capabilities that can be translated into efficient operation.
• Product layouts and production specifications
• Product quality specifications
• Capable of prioritizing multiple tasks, show sense of urgency
• Able to provide and communicate sound information to Management
