We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the development of core data engineering primitives at cloud scale. This role involves defining and driving the technical direction for Snowflake's streaming and transformation capabilities, including Streams, Tasks, Dynamic Tables, and related pipeline constructs. You will identify and lead long‑term technical investments, collaborate with product and research teams, and ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of systems handling millions of customer workloads. You will also engage directly with customers to understand real‑world usage and contribute to Snowflake’s technical reputation through design influence and external engagement.
The ideal candidate has 15+ years of experience designing and operating large‑scale distributed data systems, with deep expertise in stream processing, declarative query execution, pipeline orchestration, or data transformation at scale. Strong computer science fundamentals in distributed systems, algorithms, fault tolerance, and consistency models are required. Proficiency in C++ or Java and systems‑level reasoning are essential. Experience leading cross‑team initiatives from architecture to production at petabyte scale is a must. Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate complex technical trade‑offs are also required. Familiarity with analytical DBMS, streaming systems, and the broader data engineering ecosystem is a plus.
