Job summary

RTX's System Safety / Human System Integration (HSI) Department seeks a Principal System Safety Engineer in Aurora, CO to establish and execute major safety programs for missiles. The Safety Lead is a technical expert in missile safety and a project manager who builds and monitors program execution, coordinating with leadership and customers.

Leveraging rigorous engineering principles, the team integrates safety into every phase of the system lifecycle, enhancing reliability and safeguarding our warfighters.

As aPrincipalSystem Safety Engineer, youwill be accountable for theestablishment and execution of themajor safetyprograms.The Safety Leadis a technical expert in missile safety as well as a project manager whoestablishesand monitorssafetyprogram execution, leads programsafetyteams, and interfaces with program& functionalleadership. What You Will Do:

System Safety Program Development and Implementation

  • Develop and implement MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs, including management, analysis, evaluation, and verification tasks
  • Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards to recommend compliance strategies to program leadership

Project and Program Management Integration

  • Create and manage safety strategies, integrate tasks into the Program Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), and ensure compliance with contract and funding requirements
  • Oversee safety budgets and execution, including Earned Value Management (EVM) and coordination with CAMs, IPTLs, and product owners
  • Provide mentorship to early-career safety engineers

Risk Management and Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Proactively engage in design change boards (e.g., engineering review boards, configuration control boards) to assess impacts on safety programs
  • Coordinate and lead System Safety Working Groups with internal and external stakeholders, including government customers
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to identify and mitigate risks, ensure hazard elimination, and implement effective controls

Technical Analysis and Evaluation

  • Conduct safety analyses of engineering designs, hardware, mechanical/electrical drawings, schematics, and system requirements to ensure fault tolerance and safety compliance
  • Address safety-related interactions with suppliers and subcontractors

Lifecycle Safety Oversight

  • Manage safety considerations across all lifecycle phases, including design, integration/testing, flight test, production, field operations, returns, demilitarization, and disposal

Safety Culture and Continuous Improvement

  • Innovate and implement improved safety solutions and identify best practices to enhance the organization’s overall safety culture

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience
  • Experience developing and implementing MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses
  • Experience writing technical reports and presentations
  • Experiencewith briefing safetystatusto safety approval authorityat technical reviews, to safety review boardsand/orto othersas part of the safety approvalprocess
  • Experience managing or owning a safety program

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Program tasks and analyses, involving management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400). This includes hardware and software safety related tasks.
  • Experience with briefing at the military safety review board
  • Experience with system and software safety implementation in Agile Development environment
  • Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and Proposal Development
  • Experience interfacing with Human Systems Integration showcasing execution of Human Factors Engineering tasking involving MIL-STD-1472
  • Experience with Engineering Change Proposals, Engineering Review Boards, System Safety Working Groups

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
