Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Principal Engineer Aeronautical - Hardware Avionics (Level 3) or Senior Principal Engineer Aeronautical - Hardware Avionics (Level 4) to join its Air Vehicle Hardware Avionics team located in Rancho Bernardo (San Diego), CA.
Relocation assistance may be available. A US Government Secret clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain a Special Access Program (SAP) is required. Travel up to 10% of the time is expected. The position requires regular presence at the Rancho Bernardo site with a hybrid work schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Integrate IFF and TCAS hardware, accounting for hardware capabilities/limitations, defining interfaces, and addressing interoperability standards.
- Conduct investigations, system testing, and flight testing in lab environments.
- Provide remote and on-site troubleshooting for production and field issues.
- Support proposal development and evaluation, technical planning, verification and validation, cost and risk analysis, and trade studies.
- Translate customer or product requirements into total system solutions that balance technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
- General duties include lab and flight testing, production and field support, anomaly resolution, and supplier management.
Qualifications
- Level 3 - Principal Engineer
- Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline and 5 years of related professional/military experience, or Master's Degree in STEM and 3 years of related experience, or Ph.D. in STEM and 1 year of related experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Secret clearance and SAP.
- Experience with MATLAB and Microsoft Office applications.
- Hands-on experience using test equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, signal analyzers, multi-meters, etc.).
- Experience with IFF and/or TCAS transponders, including operation, maintenance, integration, or design.
- Level 4 - Senior Principal Engineer
- Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline and 8 years of related professional/military experience, or Master's Degree in STEM and 6 years of related experience, or Ph.D. in STEM and 4 years of related experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Secret clearance and SAP.
- Experience with MATLAB and Microsoft Office applications.
- Hands-on experience using test equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, signal analyzers, multi-meters, etc.).
- Experience with IFF and/or TCAS transponders, including operation, maintenance, integration, or design.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance or higher.
- Comprehensive knowledge of IFF and TCAS, including modes, certifications, integration, and airspace requirements.
- High-level understanding of radio-frequency communication.
- Familiarity with databuses and related protocols (MIL-STD-1553, RS-485, ARINC-429).
- Experience performing system-level design/troubleshooting, flight test, supplier management, requirements development, and verification.
- Prior experience as a military, civil, or commercial avionics technician.
Salary and Benefits
- Primary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00
- Secondary Level Salary Range: $142,200.00 - $213,400.00
- Eligible for overtime, shift differential, and discretionary bonuses.
