Job summary

RTX in Indiana (Fort Wayne) seeks a Principal Specialist Hardware Test Engineer to lead testing of complex electronic modules and assemblies. You will drive problem solving, support system integration, and design verification while collaborating across hardware, software and program leadership teams.

The role requires a DoD Secret clearance, U.S. citizenship, and hands-on experience with lab equipment and test automation. Onsite work at the Fort Wayne facility is assumed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or higher in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in hardware test engineering.
  • Experience testing electronics and reading schematics.
  • Experience with GUI TPS software and test software development.
  • Familiarity with test equipment and data acquisition tools.

The Multi-Product Power & Digital (MPD) department designs FPGAs, circuit cards, and electronics subassemblies for a range of products including missiles/effectors, radars, and electronic warfare systems. The team leverages digital, analog, and power design skills to provide support throughout the product lifecycle from architecture and design through production and sustainment.

The MPD department is seeking a Principal Specialist Hardware Test Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will lead problem solving for complex electronic modules utilizing various testing methods and techniques to identify improvement opportunities. This technical problem solving is critical to program success, and you will partner with experienced multidisciplinary teams to define requirements, develop improvement activities for technical capabilities as well as continuous improvements. You will collaborate with personnel from other RTX locations to identify best practices and opportunities for improvement while leveraging work and equipment sharing as appropriate.

What You Will Do
  • Lead problem solving for complex electronic modules, including printed circuit boards, circuit card assemblies and related modules.
  • Support system integration, test, design verification, fault identification, failure resolution, and/or acceptance of production hardware.
  • Provide support for situations including (but not limited to) customer inquiries, field failures, product obsolescence, system enhancements, new product development, integration and transition to production.
  • Evaluate and assess the performance of developmental electronic systems, including signal processing subsystems.
  • Review product designs and create test solutions that maximize test coverage in manufacturing and service environments.
  • Design test hardware, develop automated test software, and integrate the overall test solution with the end product.
  • Collaborate and work closely with internal systems, hardware, software product design teams and program leadership.
  • Prepare and present project / technical information to peers, internal management, and customers
  • Document test solutions and processes through drawings, procedures, and other formal documentation.
  • Support customer interactions and relations related to Hardware testing
  • Lead improvements to processes, systems or products to enhance overall product and test performance, safety, ergonomics, technical capabilities and compliance levels.
  • Learn basics of equipment operation in failure analysis lab and perform failure analysis with support from the Senior Failure Analysis Engineer.
  • Become familiar with component failure analysis flows as compared to system failure analysis procedures.
  • Review basic component failure analysis texts and case studies to increase knowledge and utilize as references.
  • Become familiar with MIL-STD-1580D Destructive Physical Analysis for Electronic, Electromagnetic, and Electromechanical Parts
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Experience with the following items:
    • Solving complex problems with Engineering Labs for testing electronics such as printed circuit boards, circuit card assemblies, electronic modules.
    • Troubleshooting and testing complex electronics subassemblies and systems, reading and interpreting schematics.
    • Developing and maintaining Graphical User Interface (GUI) and/or Test Program Set (TPS) or equivalent test software.
    • Working with test equipment including power supplies, electronic loads, digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers.
    • Documenting and communicating technical topics, presenting findings and recommendations to customers and leadership.
Qualifications We Value

    • Hardware testing, including cables, interface test adapters, and complex circuit card assemblies.
    • Systems integration and test
    • RF technology across Communications, Sensors, and Radar systems
    • RF system testing, digital and/or analog signal processing, waveform and signal modulation analysis, and/or algorithm implementation and testing.
    • NI Development Suite including LabVIEW, LabWindows CVI, and TestStand
    • C, C++, and C# programming languages
    • Writing software and debugging code
    • Working in a cross-discipline team
    • Demonstrated mentorship of newer or junior engineers or engineering technicians
    • Component and system failure analysis and associated equipment like X-ray, microscopy, material analysis, metallurgical cross sectioning.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
