Principal Software Engineer (Java, AWS, Kubernetes) | Elite Quant Hedge Fund (Boston)

A globally renowned quant investment firm headquartered in Boston is migrating to AWS and building out next-gen cloud native applications, data, compute, ML platforms, and their underlying infrastructure. This opportunity is particularly unique because this firm rarely hires due to their outstanding retention. They have the resources of a global leader ($800+ billion in AUM), but the collaborative culture, agility, and commitment to innovation of a much smaller org (200 headcount across the entire firm).

These cloud native applications, platforms, and their underlying infrastructure will process petabyte scale data and power proprietary models and predictive analytics systems that fuel this firm’s cutting edge investment strategies. This is an opportunity to join a small, senior team that is responsible for designing and implementing greenfield architecture for the entire org. This role will work directly with the CTO and other top engineering leaders in a highly cross functional and collaborative capacity.

We are looking for a hands-on Principal Software Engineer to design and build cloud native containerized microservices and applications with Java, AWS, and EKS. This person will also help modernize and re-architect data platforms, MLOps/data science tools, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code solutions.

Responsibilities:

• Design and build cloud native containerized microservices and applications with Java, AWS, and EKS from scratch
• Help drive an early-stage migration to AWS, and define future architecture for cloud data/ML platforms, tools, and their underlying infrastructure
• Collaborate with other teams on best practices, platform adoption, and migration of existing applications
• Work directly with the CTO and other top engineering leaders to define and execute this firm’s engineering vision, best practices, and dev culture

Skills:

• Demonstrated experience designing and building cloud native containerized microservices and applications with Java, AWS, and EKS from scratch
• Particular focus on defining backend and middle-tier architecture in Java
• Understanding of AWS best practices for CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (terraform or equivalent), and cloud security
