Job Description

The Biologics CMC Development team at AbbVie in the Bay Area is seeking a Principal Research Scientist to lead purification process development for biologics. This onsite role involves developing robust, phase-appropriate processes for drug substance GMP production, supporting clinical studies and licensure. Responsibilities include leading development, optimization, and scale-up of purification processes, contributing to development strategies, and collaborating across teams.

Responsibilities
  • Lead purification process development and optimization for biologics
  • Generate and evaluate scientific proposals and novel separation technologies
  • Manage purification strategies and project deliverables
  • Transfer processes to GMP manufacturing and work with contract labs
  • Mentor team members and contribute to scientific publications and regulatory filings
Qualifications

Basic:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related field with relevant experience
  • Expertise in monoclonal antibody purification and chromatography
  • Proficiency with AKTA systems and virus clearance studies
  • Strong communication and scientific publication record

Preferred:

  • Experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC, ELISA, mass spectrometry
  • Knowledge of chromatography modeling and process automation
