The Principal, Project Manager is accountable for the successful delivery of large, complex, and strategically significant IT projects or programs with limited managerial oversight. The role converts desired business results into an integrated delivery approach, directs cross-functional and third-party teams, resolves advanced delivery issues, and provides decision-ready reporting to sponsors and governance bodies. The incumbent operates as an internal expert in project delivery, coaches and delegates work for less experienced professionals, and influences project management policies, practices, and procedures.
Required skills and competencies: Expert knowledge of project and program management principles, governance, delivery controls, and lifecycle practices across predictive, agile, and hybrid environments. Demonstrated ability to independently structure and lead large, complex, high-visibility technology initiatives with multiple stakeholders, workstreams, vendors, and dependencies. Advanced capability in integrated planning, critical-path and dependency management, risk and issue management, change control, financial management, resource planning, and benefits tracking. Strong executive presence, facilitation, negotiation, conflict resolution, decision framing, and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to influence without direct authority, build alignment among competing priorities, and translate technical and business information for varied audiences. Working knowledge of IT governance, cybersecurity, privacy, compliance, architecture, service transition, procurement, and vendor management considerations. Proficiency with enterprise project management, collaboration, reporting, and data analysis tools. Experience with Microsoft 365, Microsoft Project or comparable scheduling tools, and portfolio or work-management platforms is preferred.
Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, business, engineering, project management, or a related field.
Preferred: Master’s degree in business administration, information systems, technology management, or a related field.
Preferred certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent recognized project management credential; PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), SAFe certification, PRINCE2, or ITIL certification relevant to the delivery environment. Additional certifications in change management, risk management, cybersecurity, cloud platforms, or vendor management are beneficial when aligned to assigned projects.
Experience Required: Minimum eight years of functional experience, including at least five years of position-specific project or program management experience. Required: Proven experience leading large, complex IT projects with limited oversight and accountability for integrated scope, schedule, budget, risk, quality, and stakeholder outcomes. Required: Experience coaching, reviewing, and delegating work to project team members or lower-level professionals. Preferred: Experience delivering enterprise-scale initiatives involving global teams, third parties, organizational changes, security or compliance requirements, and transition to operations. Preferred: Experience developing delivery standards, improving portfolio or project governance, and presenting to senior leaders or steering committees.
The role may require work across business units, technical domains, vendors, and global time zones. Travel and on-site attendance may be required based on project needs and should be confirmed for the specific assignment. This is an individual-contributor leadership role. It does not require direct people-management responsibility, but it does require leadership of matrixed resources, delegation of work, coaching, and review of deliverables. The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $116,000.00 - $197,200.00 per year. The ranges above reflect the potential annual base pay across the U.S. for all roles; the applicable base pay range will depend on the candidate’s primary work location, pay grade, and variable compensation plan.
