Job description

Home energy needs a new architecture, and we're building it. Stormentum is a storage-first architecture built for the electrified home, designed to replace the traditional inverter and its ancillary parts with a battery-agnostic system that reduces total cost by up to 30% compared to today's typical home energy systems.

Stormentum was founded by industry veterans who've spent decades building and scaling technology ventures — generating billions in shareholder value across wireless, semiconductors, and energy. We're bringing that experience to bear on the hardest problem in the space: making storage-first systems affordable enough for every homeowner, not just early adopters.

About the Role

At Stormentum you'll join the hardware and modeling team as our Principal Power Electronics Engineer, owning the hardware design of the power conversion stage, spanning both the DC-DC battery interface and the DC-AC grid interface, from topology selection and magnetics through power-stage architecture, taking it from concept through high-volume production. You'll own schematic-level design decisions for high-power, high-voltage converter hardware and provide direct technical direction on PCB layout.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the design and development of the power conversion stage for Stormentum's modular multilevel converter platform, including topology selection, magnetics, and power-stage architecture
  • Own schematic capture for high-power, high-voltage converter hardware and provide hands‑on technical direction and review of PCB layout execution
  • Select and qualify power semiconductor devices (SiC, GaN, IGBT) and drive component‑level trade‑off decisions across efficiency, thermal performance, and cost
  • Design and validate power conversion topologies across both DC-DC (battery interface) and DC-AC (grid interface) stages, including dual active bridge, cascaded H-bridge, three-level, multilevel, and solid‑state transformer (SST) architectures, suited to a modular, cellular architecture
  • Lead EMI/EMC design and compliance activities for grid‑connected power electronics hardware
  • Own hardware development from concept through high-volume production, including design for manufacturability, design for test, and compliance testing
  • Lead lab bring‑up, testing, and debugging of prototype and production hardware
  • Set technical direction for power electronics design decisions, lead design reviews, and mentor engineers across the hardware team
  • Collaborate closely with the controls, firmware, and systems architecture teams to ensure the power stage design supports system‑level performance and certification requirements
What You'll Bring
  • MS in Electrical Engineering or a similar field (PhD a plus), with extensive experience in end‑to‑end power electronics product development from concept through commercialization
  • 10+ years of experience designing and delivering high‑voltage, high‑power power electronics converters, with a minimum of 2 full cycles of projects bringing distinct products to market
  • Deep hands‑on experience with wide‑bandgap semiconductor devices (SiC, GaN), including prior personal ownership of schematic and PCB design
  • Experience with circuit modeling, simulation, and PCB design tools (SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Altium Designer)
  • Hands‑on laboratory experience with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads, and grid simulators
  • Strong working knowledge of grid‑interconnection and functional‑safety standards relevant to power conversion hardware (UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, UL 1741 PCS, UL 1998, and IEC 61508) and the ability to design to those standards, even without having personally owned a certification through completion
What Will Make You Stand Out
  • Familiarity with Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs)
  • Direct experience owning a product through UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, UL 1741 PCS, UL 1998, or IEC 61508 certification end‑to‑end, including engagement with a 3rd‑party certification lab
  • Familiarity with international grid standards including CSA C22.2 No.107.1, IEC 62109‑1/-2, and EN 50549
  • Experience in volume manufacturing environments, including design for cost optimization, yield improvement, and supplier engagement
  • Background in grid‑tied inverter systems, energy storage, or utility‑scale power conversion
Compensation and Benefits

The successful candidate’s base pay will be determined based on several factors, including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, and organizational needs. This position is also eligible for equity awards and benefits.

We offer comprehensive benefits including life, medical, dental, vision, 401(k), flexible time off, and paid holidays.
