Job summary

Roblox is seeking a principal engineer for the Object Store team to design and operate our in-house, multi-tenant object storage platform at exabyte scale. You will architect, build, and launch capabilities that ensure durability, speed, and efficiency across global data centers.

This role emphasizes ownership of low-latency services on bare-metal infrastructure and cross-functional collaboration. You will drive architecture, data placement, replication strategies, and operational excellence,

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering or related field.
• Experience building and operating large-scale distributed storage systems.
• Hands-on experience running object storage platforms in production.
• Strong skills in low-latency, high-throughput services on bare-metal and on-prem fleets.

Responsibilities

• Design and build the object store (S3-compatible gateway, metadata, indexing).
• Own multi-year architecture and migration off cloud object storage.
• Evolve the control plane for elastic scaling, autonomous healing, and provisioning.
• Run the bare-metal fleet at scale: cluster lifecycle, upgrades, and capacity planning.
• Profile and optimize critical data paths to reduce tail latency and cost per byte.
• Establish engineering best practices: design reviews, benchmarks, and incident retrospectives.
• Automate testing, CI/CD, rollout safety, observability, and autoscaling.
• Mentor engineers and partner with security, analytics, and product teams.
