Job summary

Mission Support and Test Services (MSTS) is seeking an experienced Linux DevOps Analyst to support PULSE at NNSS. You will install, operate, and maintain controls and communications systems for high-hazard experiments, collaborating with LANL, LLNL, and SNL as needed.

The role requires strong Python/C++ skills, DevOps practices, and a willingness to travel. The position offers 4/10 work schedule, security clearance process, and work at NNSS forward areas with occasional travel to national labs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field or equivalent experience with at least 8 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of software development or database administration principles, standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to lead complex projects with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to learn new tools and evaluate solutions for problems.
  • Experience with NNSS tools and a broad range of programming languages (Python, C/C++, etc.).
  • Familiarity with OT Systems, EPICS, GitLab, and containerized AI/ML workloads.

Responsibilities

  • Support engineers and scientists with installation, operation, and maintenance of controls and communications systems for subcritical experiments at PULSE facility.
  • Develop standards and procedures for NNSS IT and Cyber interfaces with accelerator control networks.
  • Define software requirements and guide design, implementation, and testing.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot RHEL servers, DevOps platforms, and container orchestration.
  • Develop GitLab CI/CD pipelines for DevOps and AI/ML workflows.

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsiblities

MSTS is seeking an experienced Linux DevOps Analyst (Principal Applications Analyst) to support engineers and scientists with the installation, operation, and maintenance of controls and communications systems associated with pulsed power machines designed to interrogate explosively driven physics packages on subcritical experiments (SCEs) at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) facility. This position is based in Nevada but requires occasional travel to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LANL), and Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) prior to the accelerator arriving in North Las Vegas for integration testing and final installation and operation at the PULSE facility located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the development of standards, practices, and procedures that impacts how the Scorpius accelerator control system communications network interfaces with NNSS’s IT and Cyber systems.

  • Participate in defining software requirements for development, maintenance, and improvements by responding to questions concerning software design and implementation.

  • Take ownership of technical problems and sees them through to resolution.

  • Guide programmers and analysts in systems analysis, development, or maintenance techniques; selection of design alternatives; performance analysis; and programming techniques.

  • Coordinate, develop, implement plans for installation, testing, and maintenance.

  • Prepare time and cost estimates and schedule for software development, maintenance, and modification tasks.

  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot RHEL Linux servers/workstations including automated OS imaging.

  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot DevOps and software supply chain platforms.

  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot container orchestration platforms.

  • Incorporate DevSecOps cybersecurity best practices.

  • System architecture and documentation.

  • Develop GitLab CI/CD pipelines for DevOps and AI/ML workflows.

  • Liaison between IT & Cybersecurity.

  • Collaborate with other National Laboratories and incorporate their technology stacks which may differ from internal standards.

  • Install, configure, maintain and troubleshoot Tril-Lab Operating System Stack (TOSS), a Linux distribution based on RHEL created for high performance HPC clusters for laboratories within the National Nuclear Security Administration, allowing multiple smaller systems to emulate a high-performance computing (HPD) platform.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field or equivalent computer-related experience with at least 8 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience.

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of technical principles, theories, standards, practices and procedures in software development or database administration.

  • Ability to lead complex projects that may involve collaboration with multiple IT sections, other departments, consultants, as well as outside business units.

  • Must be willing to accept responsibility in new areas and possess the level of technical and analytical skills that will provide successful outcomes to those assignments.

  • Must have expert experience in broad range of tools and technology used by NNSS.

  • Must have the aptitude and desire to continually learn about new tools and technology and have the ability to evaluate the best solution for stated problems.

  • Experience handling dependencies in a secure/air-gapped environment.

  • Familiarity with mainstream programming languages (Python, C/C++, etc.) and building/compiling code from source.

  • Familiarity with OT Systems.

  • Familiarity with Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS).

  • Familiarity with GitLab, JFrog, Ansible, Satellite, Podman.

  • Building and running AI, ML, and data science workloads with containers

  • Familiarity with GPU Clusters.

  • The primary work location will be in the forward areas at the Nevada National Security Site (forward areas are approximately 90 miles from North Las Vegas) with some work occasionally performed at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada. The PULSE facility is located in the forward areas of the NNSS.

  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).

  • Limited travel is required.

  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Annual salary range for this position is: $118,560.00 - $180,814.40
