Job summary

King County is building a new internal audit function and seeks a collaborative Principal Internal Auditor to establish processes, lead risk-based audits, and shape the annual audit plan within a complex government environment.

The candidate will work with the Internal Audit Director to develop policies, templates, and the quality control system, oversee staff and external auditors, and maintain independence while delivering actionable insights for accountability and governance.

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of audit standards including IIA Global Internal Audit Standards or GAO/IGE standards.
• Strong communication and report-writing skills with ability to present to leadership.
• Ability to lead teams and manage competing priorities.
• Experience planning, executing, and reporting on performance, compliance, and financial audits.
• Familiarity with government auditing environment preferred.

Responsibilities

• Plan, lead, and execute risk-based performance, compliance, and financial audits.
• Develop clear, concise audit and advisory reports.
• Present findings and recommendations to department and executive leadership.
• Develop and refine audit policies, procedures, and templates within the quality control system.
• Lead the annual internal audit risk assessment and audit plan.
• Supervise audits conducted by staff or consultants and ensure independence and objectivity.
