Annual Salary Range: $150,279.00 (Minimum) - $227,673.00 (Maximum)
Note:The starting negotiable salary offer for this position will be $150,279.00 - $188,974.61 to commensurate with education and experience.

This position works a standard Monday–Friday schedule with weekends off; however, some overnight, weekend, emergency, or on-call work may be required to support critical operational needs.

Current Assignment

BART’s Office of Infrastructure Delivery (OID) is seeking one (1) Principal Integration Engineer to join the Integration Engineering team as the Principal CBTC and Train Control Integration Lead. This position provides senior-level leadership for integrating BART’s modern Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system with the existing train control and related operational systems.

The Principal Integration Engineer helps guide the full lifecycle of system integration—from early requirements and design through installation, testing, commissioning, and ongoing support. The role reviews and coordinates engineering work related to system designs, software and hardware configurations, technical drawings, specifications, and testing plans. A key responsibility is ensuring all systems—CBTC, conventional train control, vehicles, communications, wayside equipment, and the Operations Control Center—work together safely and reliably.

This position also leads planning and coordination for a wide range of testing activities, including lab testing, field testing, and operational scenario testing. The Principal Integration Engineer supports commissioning and cutover activities and helps manage contingency and rollback plans when needed by providing technical leadership by troubleshooting problems, reviewing diagnostic data, and recommending long-term solutions that improve system reliability and performance.

The Principal Integration Engineer works in close partnership with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Safety, Capital Delivery, and a variety of external consultants, contractors, and vendors. Key responsibilities include reviewing technical materials, managing system interfaces, identifying and addressing risks, and mentoring engineering team members. Some overnight, weekend, emergency, or on-call work may be required to support critical operational needs.

The most qualified candidates for this position will have highly developed competencies in the following areas, which will be reinforced with related work experience and will be clearly articulated during the selection process:

  • Advanced technical knowledge of CBTC, conventional Train Control, railway signaling, interlockings, automatic train protection, automatic train operation, automatic train supervision, train detection, and associated communication systems.
  • Experience leading Train Control requirements, design, interface management, system integration, verification and validation, testing, commissioning, cutover, and in-service support.
  • Experience integrating CBTC with conventional Train Control, Rolling Stock, wayside equipment, communications, and Operations Control Center systems.
  • Experience investigating service-impacting incidents, performing root-cause analysis, interpreting diagnostic and performance data, and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
  • Proven ability to lead complex engineering work, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and external contractors, and resolve technical and operational issues in a safety-critical environment.
  • Strong technical-writing, communication, decision-making, stakeholder-coordination, and mentoring skills.
  1. Establishes schedules and methods for providing project administration services; oversees the inspection and verification of quantities of materials; ensures adherence to specifications; identifies resource needs; monitors progress of large-scale construction projects; allocates resources accordingly.
  2. Participates in the development of policies and procedures; monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
  3. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; implements approved policies and procedures.
  4. Represents the District with full authority to enforce contract requirements; evaluates proposed contract changes; prepares independent engineering cost estimates of revised project scopes; inspects construction at substantial and final completion stages.
  5. Participates in the selection of contracted staff; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures.
  6. Participates in the preparation and administration of assigned program budget; estimates project costs and tracks spending; submits budget recommendations; monitors expenditures.
  7. Prepares analytical and statistical reports on assigned project operations and activities.
  8. Initiates and evaluates design and field engineering changes during construction; recommends approval of and submits contractor's progress payment applications; recommends retention levels as appropriate.
  9. Coordinates with outside agencies on areas of work within their jurisdiction; administers control of required documentation for construction contracts. Attends or leads project meetings.
  10. Creates, updates and modifies various project management documents.
  11. Prepares or reviews a variety of reports and correspondence on assigned construction projects including Inspector's Daily Reports, monthly and final completion reports, contract modifications and field or design engineering changes.
  12. Prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of professional engineering, design or construction project duties.
  13. Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of engineering design and construction.
  14. Participates in the resolution of construction contract claim issues.
  15. Conducts field visits and site inspections.
Education

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience

The equivalent of five years (5) years of electrical engineering, project management, or related experience.

Substitution

Additional professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis. A college degree is preferred.
