Job summary

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Principle Flight Test Instrumentation Mechanical Design Engineer to lead a diverse team in our Test & Evaluation organization. You will design flight test hardware, integrate sensors, and collaborate across IPTs to deliver instrumentation that measures stress, vibration, temperature, and displacement.

The role requires a STEM degree plus years of related experience and an active Secret clearance; relocation assistance may be available and a 25%

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline with 5 years of related professional/military experience OR Master's degree with 2 years of related professional/military experience.
  • Active US Government Secret clearance or eligibility for clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance within business needs.
  • Solid understanding of flight test mechanical installations.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation sensors (strain gauges, accelerometers, pressure transducers).

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for Principle Flight Test Instrumentation Mechanical Design Engineer to Lead our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Test & Evaluation organization.

In this role you will be responsible for mechanical designs associated with flight test electronic equipment, and integration onto test vehicles. These design activities will be associated with any of the following – cable interface assemblies, data acquisition hardware, and a variety of sensors design to measure stress, thermal, vibration, and linear / rotational displacement.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Complete mechanical design life cycle from concept to system integration for flight test instrumentation hardware.
  • Facilitate cross IPT / discipline collaboration in the development of flight test instrumentation designs.
  • Procurement of hardware in support of mechanical designs.
  • Serve as the point of contact with vendors, manufacturers, and technician teams in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of flight test instrumentation equipment.
Basic Qualifications for Principal Instrumentation Mechanical Design Engineer:
  • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline AND 5 years of related professional/military experience, OR a Master’s degree AND 2 years of related professional/military experience.
  • Must have an active US Government Secret clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance, within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs.
  • Solid understanding of application and implementations of flight test mechanical installations.
  • Strong knowledge of capabilities, uses, and limitations of Strain Gages, Accelerometers, Pressure Transducers and other commonly used instrumentation sensor design and Installation.
  • Knowledge or experience navigating MIL-STD documents and specifications
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with gathering system requirements.
  • Able to create detailed design specifications, product manuals, ICDs, and/or design handbooks.
  • Design and operational experience with TTC data systems.
  • Familiarity with fundamental principles of Symvionics IADS software or working in a Mission Control Room
  • Knowledge or experience with IRIG 106; CH10, CH7, and TM Downlink.
  • Demonstrated ability to support post-test data processing and analysis to provide recommendations / authorize configuration changes of the test instrumentation system for flight to Engineering and Leadership.

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,400.00 - $147,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
