Description

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is hiring a Principal Human Factors Engineer / Senior Principal Human Factors Engineer located in Melbourne, Florida. The role supports the Human Systems Integration team to ensure aircraft hardware and software are operable by U.S. military flight and maintenance crews. The position requires a strong systems engineering background and a Secret clearance.

Relocation assistance may be available. Travel required: ~10% of the time.

Essential Functions
  • Support the evaluation of requirements adhering to Human Factors best practices and specified sections of MIL-STD-1472.
  • Contribute to Human Factors Analyses (Task Analyses, Predictive Workload Analyses, Usability studies, Workload, and Situational Awareness surveys).
  • Plan and conduct Pilot in the Loop (PITL) assessments, analyze test data and generate final test reports.
  • Support requirement verification test activities: Display Readability, Lighting Evaluations, Anthropometric Accommodation, Crew Alerting System (CAS) Evaluations, Modified Rhyme Testing (MRT), Maintenance Demonstrations, etc.
  • Conduct computer‑based (NX) and empirical accessibility assessments from operator and maintainer perspectives.
  • Author and support program documentation in formats consistent with U.S. Military Data Item Descriptions.
  • Collaborate with Design Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to ensure evolving design addresses program needs and Human Interface design requirements.
  • Support Airworthiness analysis, artifact development, and compliance summaries.
Basic Qualifications
  • Principal Engineer/Human Factors: Bachelor’s degree & 5 years of experience, or Master’s degree & 3 years, or PhD & 1 year in a related field.
  • Senior Principal Engineer/Human Factors: Bachelor’s degree & 8 years of experience, or Master’s degree & 6 years, or PhD & 4 years in a related field.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-1472, Human Factor survey development, test procedure development/execution, and test report writing.
  • Active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance with background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation, and ability to obtain Program Access.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active, In‑Scope Top Secret DoD clearance and ability to obtain Program Access.
  • Experience developing, administering, or analyzing Human Factors questionnaires such as Usability, Workload, and Situational Awareness.
  • Proficiency in writing and executing demonstration & test procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for engineering findings.
  • Familiarity with systems safety, personnel survivability, and habitability requirements.
  • Experience with CAD Tools (NX and NX Jack). Experience with DOORS and system modeling tools (CORE, Rhapsody, PTC Integrity Modeler, Cameo).
  • Knowledge of HMI/HCI design principles and practices.
  • Experience authoring Human Interface Design CDRLs per DoD Data Item Descriptions (e.g., HEDAD‑M/O, HEPP, HSIPP, HETP/R).
  • Experience interpreting, applying, or tailoring MIL-STD-1472, MIL-STD-411, MIL-STD-1787, MIL-STD-3009, MIL-STD-46855 for aircraft design activity.
Salary

Primary Level: $98,400.00 – $147,600.00

Secondary Level: $122,800.00 – $184,200.00
