Job summary

Apex Companies, LLC is seeking a Principal Engineer to drive growth of a new Pittsburgh branch and lead water and wastewater design projects. You will recruit and mentor a technical team, develop client relationships, and manage projects from inception to completion.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering.
• PA PE license; additional state licenses preferred.
• 15+ years in water/wastewater engineering design.
• Experience leading projects and developing client relationships.
• Ability to mentor junior staff and lead project teams.
• Experience overseeing wastewater treatment, pump stations, water systems, and permitting reports.

Your Responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - W/WW:

• Assist in the establishment, management, and growth of a new branch office with division and regional support.
• Help recruit, build, and manage a team of technical staff to support office operations and project execution.
• Assist with the development and implementation of strategies for recruiting new clients, leveraging existing relationships and expanding business opportunities supporting the development of small to large design projects from inception to completion.
• Lead project management efforts for water and wastewater engineering projects, including sewer comprehensive plans, engineering reports, and design for water/wastewater treatment, collection, distribution, water modeling, and pump stations.
• Support the work of others and mentor junior‑level engineers & design/drafting technical staff.
• Prepare detailed engineering reports, construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and problem‑solving.
• Participate in internal and external technical organizations.

What we’re looking for:

• BS degree in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering.
• PE license registration in Pennsylvania.
• PE licenses in additional states desired.
• 15+ years of experience in engineering design with a focus on water and/or wastewater systems.
• Proven experience in managing engineering projects and project managers as well as developing client relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and oversee projects, including wastewater treatment systems, pump stations, water systems and sewer collection systems, funding, permitting, and planning reports.
• A desire to play a key role in growing our Pittsburgh metro office and contributing to the firm’s long‑term success.
