Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine seeks a Principal Engineer for Platform & Cloud Engineering in its R&D Advanced Computing group focused on Digital Imaging Technologies. This role can be located in Beerse, BE; Leiden, NL; Madrid, ES; Maidenhead, UK; Raritan, NJ; or Spring House, PA.
The R&D Advanced Computing team delivers high‑performing, scalable, reusable solutions across IM R&D, shaping the future of Digital Imaging platforms and AI‑driven workflows.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Science or related field and 6+ years of experience OR Master’s degree with 4+ years of experience.
- Proven ability to lead technology platforms, programs, projects and apply technical acumen to create new opportunities.
- Experience with Python, Java, C++ or related languages.
- Experience with AWS EC2 and S3; containerization (Docker/Singularity/Kubernetes) and AWS EKS.
- Experience with Windows and Linux platforms; technical vendor management.
- Experience working on cross-functional and global teams; Agile methodology.
Responsibilities
- Set technology strategy/roadmaps and lead deployments to business partners across Digital Imaging domains.
- Maintain strong partnerships with stakeholders across Pre-Clinical Sciences, Oncology, Neuroscience, and Data Sciences.
- Contribute expertise to identify opportunities for Digital Imaging platform capabilities.
- Collaborate across IT, influence leadership, and partner with the Life Sciences imaging community.
- Drive technology stack including scheduling, monitoring, deployment, orchestration and infrastructure.

Innovative Medicine Research & Development, a Johnson & Johnson company, is recruiting for Principal Engineer, Platform & Cloud Engineering in our R&D Advanced Computing group focused on Digital Imaging Technologies. This position can be located in Beerse, BE; Leiden, NL; Madrid, ES; Maidenhead, UK Raritan, NJ; or Spring House, PA.
The R&D Advanced Computing team is part of a broader R&D Engineering organization that works on leading-edge technology solutions to drive the Innovative Medicine R&D business. R&D Advanced Computing is made up of a group of technical engineers and solution architects engaged in the hands-on delivery of business solutions. Team members typically work directly with business partners in delivering solutions. The team prides itself on being closely involved in all aspects of deployments, including assisting with defining business value propositions and user story collections, designing robust solution architectures and implementing the technical solutions. Our mission is to architect, design and implement the best technology to deliver high performing, scalable, reusable and cost optimized solutions across the IM R&D organization, enabling opportunities and significant business value that could not have been accomplished before, accelerating medicine to patients who are waiting.
- Be a key contributor in setting technology strategy/roadmaps, as well as lead and implement technology deployments to business partners in all areas of Digital Imaging, including but not limited to Digital Pathology, Digital Radiology and Clinical Imaging
- Maintain strong partnerships with business partners in Pre-Clinical Sciences & Translational Safety, Oncology, Neuroscience, Immunology, Data Sciences, Molecular Imaging and others based on incoming demand
- Contribute technology expertise to help identify and assess areas of greatest opportunity and impact for Digital Imaging technology platforms in pharmaceutical research and development at Innovative Medicine, and execution of Digital Imaging platform capabilities
- Collaborate with numerous groups across the IT organization, engage and influence in sector and enterprise technology leadership, as well as partner externally with the Life Sciences industry Imaging community
- Drive the team's technology stack, including capabilities for scheduling, communication, monitoring, reporting, alerting, deployment, orchestration, configuration management, infrastructure, reuse and reproducibility
- Leverage the unique capabilities of cloud computing to deliver effective solutions
- Establish long term sustainable operational processing and resource models
- Stay abreast of the rapidly changing technology landscape and incorporate technologies such as containerization, serverless and accelerated AI / Machine Learning / Deep Learning / Agentic AI as appropriate to deliver business value
- Design and develop generative and agentic AI platforms, including LLM-powered applications, autonomous and multi-agent workflows, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and model orchestration that accelerate digital imaging workflows
- Build and operationalize solutions on Cloud (AWS or Azure) using comparable foundation models, establishing reusable patterns for prompt engineering, tool/function calling, agent orchestration, evaluation, and responsible AI guardrails
- Exhibit capable and authentic technology leadership to learn from, develop, support, and motivate junior team members
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Science, or related field and a minimum of 6 years of industry experience; OR a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Science, or related field and a minimum of 4 years of industry experience
- Proven ability to lead technology platforms, programs, projects and apply technical acumen to create new opportunities
- Experience with Python, Java, C++, or related complex programming language

The anticipated base pay range for this position in UK is GBP 56.400 to GBP 97.980
The anticipated base pay range for this position in NETHERLANDS is EUR 68.600 to EUR 119.600
The anticipated base pay range for this position in US is USD 102.000 to USD 177.100
In addition to base pay, we offer the following benefits*: an annual bonus with set target (% of pay) depending on pay grade / location, where the actual amount is based on the employees’ and companies’ performance of the previous calendar year, or sales commissions.
