Job description

Responsibilities
  • The incumbent will develop, keep, and maintain the building drawings database, including building and equipment drawings, turnover packages, equipment manuals and specifications, and sequence of operations; ensure the building operates as designed and suggest and implement changes as needed; act as gatekeeper and approve any changes in conjunction with the AbbVie team.
  • Produces unique and cost‑effective results; establishes alternate use possibilities and incorporates flexibility; balances system costs with benefits provided; oversees design work of internal and external consultants; creates or modifies designs for intermediate problems; integrates financial with technical data; analyzes complex interdisciplinary problems; identifies their impact; establishes probabilities; draws conclusions reflecting broad business needs.
  • Represents engineering on corporate task forces; identifies customer/client needs and proposes solutions; makes alterations to products or services to better meet customer needs; participates in establishing strategic plans and objectives on administrative and operational matters and ensuring effective achievement of objectives.
  • Works with outside vendors to prepare plans, budgets, and schedules for facility modifications including estimates, quotes, layout, contracts, calibrations, and maintenance requirements; coordinates with outside vendors to complete inspections of construction and installation progress to ensure compliance with established specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Manages engineering, maintenance, alteration, and relocation of office/laboratory areas and equipment as well as space assignments and layout arrangements for new employees; oversees the maintenance and monitoring of all building equipment including HVAC, hot water boilers, chillers, cooling towers, emergency generator, transfer switches, building automation, sprinkler system, utilities, plumbing, and electrical; interacts with vendors and contractors for routine requests.
  • Provides off‑hours support during emergencies, disasters, and projects requiring non‑business hours supervision or coordination; develops, implements, and manages HS&E policies and procedures, benchmarks safety programs and techniques to ensure compliance, injury prevention, and risk mitigation; administers office, utilities, and laboratory safety and security plans and procedures, continually monitoring locations to keep them safe, secure, and well‑maintained.
  • In conjunction with HS&E, performs injury and illness investigations, root cause analysis, data trending, program audits, and laboratory safety and compliance inspections; investigates accidents to identify causes and preventive measures; prepares and forwards reports on injuries to appropriate agencies; ensures all required written programs (e.g., hazard communication, contingency plan) are properly documented.
  • Establishes budget and accurate spending projections, manages within capital and operating resources, and identifies significant capital spend requirements during budget preparation; develops policies and procedures for the facility, operations, and engineering team; communicates these to subordinates to ensure compliance using proper tools and safety procedures.
  • Manages and coordinates year‑end shutdowns, including preventative maintenance, major projects, and lab modifications; is responsible for long‑range planning and delivery of multiple change programs on time, including project performance, risk management, administration, financial management, and issue resolution; develops and reports metrics for continuous improvement and maintenance of the facility; manages all daily operations for facility, engineering, maintenance, and metrology; performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsibilities at this engineering grade level include and expand upon responsibilities established for lower grades; provides mentorship and guidance to the integrated facility management (IFM) engineering team, including writing maintenance procedures and tracking KPIs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, science, or a closely related discipline (or equivalent technical experience) plus a desired 6+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.
  • Possesses strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures; works on complex problems where analysis involves multiple competing factors.
  • Demonstrates judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
  • Listens to and understands others’ points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.
  • Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast‑paced, goal‑driven environment.
  • Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.
Preferred
  • BS Engineering Degree in Biomedical, Chemical, or Mechanical that is highly desirable.
  • 5+ years of experience in Large Capital Projects and Facility Upgrades, specializing in Clean Utility and HVAC Design, highly desirable.
  • GMP experience in Pharmaceutical or Medical Device industry highly desirable.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, Maximo, and Revit is desirable.
