The Principal Electrical Engineer will serve as the site’s senior electrical engineering technical authority at Amgen Ohio, supporting a high-speed, 24/7 final drug product packaging operation. This role provides electrical engineering leadership across the site’s medium- and low-voltage distribution systems, emergency power infrastructure, power quality, reliability programs, facility modifications, and capital projects.

The successful candidate will partner closely with Operations, Facilities & Engineering, Quality, EH&S, Automation, Maintenance, and external service providers to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable operation of critical electrical systems.

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role, you will support the Facilities & Engineering operations team at Amgen Ohio (AOH), a state‑of‑the‑art final drug product manufacturing facility. You will be responsible for the safe, reliable, compliant, and efficient operation of site utility, facility, and infrastructure electrical systems that support commercial manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership for site electrical infrastructure, including medium‑voltage distribution, substations, switchgear, transformers, generators, ATS/paralleling systems, UPS systems, and low‑voltage distribution.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for electrical reliability, power quality, emergency power, system protection, and electrical safety.
  • Lead complex troubleshooting and root‑cause investigations involving electrical failures, voltage disturbances, protection‑system operation, generator and transfer system events, and facility outages.
  • Develop and maintain electrical system standards, operating procedures, failure‑mode analyses, preventive maintenance strategies, and critical‑spares recommendations.
  • Support the planning, design, execution, commissioning, and turnover of capital projects, facility improvements, equipment installations, and expansion activities.
  • Review electrical designs, specifications, studies, and contractor work to ensure compliance with applicable codes, Amgen standards, GMP expectations, and site reliability requirements.
  • Lead or support arc‑flash, coordination, short‑circuit, load‑flow, harmonics, and power‑quality studies, translating results into practical site improvements.
  • Partner with Operations and Maintenance teams to improve equipment reliability, reduce operational risk, and minimize manufacturing downtime.
  • Provide technical oversight of electrical contractors, engineering firms, equipment vendors, and service providers.
  • Support electrical safety programs, including NFPA 70E compliance, energized‑work practices, lockout/tagout considerations, and incident prevention.
  • Participate in site shutdown planning, outage coordination, emergency‑response planning, and return‑to‑service activities.
  • Mentor engineers and technical staff while strengthening electrical engineering capability across the site.
  • Communicate technical risks, reliability priorities, project status, and investment needs clearly to site leadership.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible electrical engineering experience supporting complex industrial, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, utility, or other mission‑critical facilities.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in medium‑voltage and low‑voltage power distribution, including substations, switchgear, transformers, generators, automatic transfer switches, paralleling gear, UPS systems, and protective relaying.
  • Experience leading electrical reliability initiatives, electrical‑system troubleshooting, root‑cause investigations, and corrective actions following equipment failures, power‑quality events, or utility interruptions.
  • Experience developing electrical system studies and strategies, including short‑circuit, coordination, arc‑flash, load‑flow, harmonics, and power‑quality assessments.
  • Proven experience leading electrical capital projects from early scope development and design through installation, commissioning, and operational turnover.
  • Experience working in a regulated GMP, life‑sciences, food, semiconductor, or similarly controlled manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NEC, OSHA requirements, IEEE standards, and electrical safety practices.
