Job summary

Alcon is seeking a Principal Engineer to join the Device Design team in Fort Worth, TX. You will lead mechanical design activities for ophthalmic devices, apply advanced engineering principles, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust solutions.

The role requires strong CAD (SolidWorks/Creo), experience with medical devices, and expertise in design controls, verification, validation, and production transfer. This is an on-site position in Fort Worth with travel up to 10%.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent with 5+ years related experience.
  • Experience designing and developing medical devices and packaging.
  • Strong CAD skills in SolidWorks or Creo and proficient in GD&T.

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, and optimize complex mechanical components and systems for ophthalmic devices.
  • Lead design reviews, verification/validation, and production transfer activities.
  • Create detailed fabrication drawings with GD&T and maintain design documentation and ECN records.

This role is part of Alcon's Engineering function, a team focused on improving quality, processes, products, packaging and materials across our business to help deliver brilliant outcomes. Principal I, Mechanical Design Engineering (Science/Tech/Engineering Path), is primarily responsible for designing, analyzing, and optimizing complex mechanical components and systems. You will be expected to build effective and meaningful relationships with cross-functional teams and apply advanced engineering principles to solve problems.This role is on-site in our Fort Worth, Texas location and a typical day would include:Responsible for supporting device engineering activities for ocular health related new products. He/she will support research & development in the area of novel ophthalmic devices (including novel packaging/ delivery devices)Hands on participation in or support the product development activities such as design development, prototyping/testing, pilot builds, verification & validation testing, risk assessment and production tooling validation.Applies statistical principles to communicate meaningful conclusions relevant to customer needsApplies knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods for medical devicesGenerate detailed fabrication drawings utilizing GD&T and tolerance analysis, appropriate product requirements and technical file documents and lead design reviews.Applies principles of engineering analysis to blend technical knowledge and manufacturing practices in providing solutions to complex engineering challenges.Develops requirements, leads design reviews, performance of verification and validation, production transfer and related documentation.Generates internal reports for communication with cross-functional members and management.Support all aspects of documentation. Verification Plans and Reports; and design control through ECN, and Windchill.Support existing device and ophthalmic packaging by addressing select product support requests and addressing questions on existing products.Ensures regulatory / statutory / legislative compliance for all project work.Working knowledge of Solid Works/ PTC Creo and related detailed drawings.Working knowledge and experience with mechanical systems and assemblies.Ability to work under minimum oversight to identify and prioritize work activities as necessary to achieve project goals within set timelines.Work efficiently and productively with other team members and external partners.Adheres to Alcon's guidelines for appropriate workplace behaviors and attitudesPreferred Qualifications:Experience in medical devices is preferred.Proficiency in CAD.
