Job summary

Healthfirst is seeking a Principal Engineer, Cloud Systems to lead enterprise cloud strategy across public and private clouds. You will mentor engineers, implement automation, and drive standardized cloud usage and security practices in collaboration with development teams.

The role focuses on building scalable, reliable cloud platforms, establishing SOPs, and contributing to a Center of Excellence for cloud best practices within a regulated environment.

Qualifications

• Technical degree or equivalent work experience in IT.
• Experience designing, building, and managing Linux/Unix-based and Windows systems.
• Extensive cloud experience across AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.
• I&O Engineering experience overseeing public and private cloud technologies.
• Proven automation scripting with Bash, Python and/or PowerShell.

Responsibilities

• Works across Infrastructure & Operations portfolio supporting private/public cloud systems, OS, middleware, storage, database platforms, and other infrastructure products.
• Provides informal coaching and direction to I&O Engineering team.
• Serves as SME for advanced analysis and complex issue resolution.
• Develops repeatable automation to deliver capabilities efficiently.
• Implements automation to prevent issues and improve reliability.
• Supports private cloud Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure (HCI) technologies.
• Leads Center of Excellence for cloud usage and standards.
• Maintains accurate inventory of servers, storage, networking, software and virtual environments for scaling.
• Ensures cloud usage meets governance standards and improves security/ops efficiency.
• Creates SOPs for Healthfirst operations teams.
• Acts as senior escalation point for incidents and on-call rotation.
• Leads as a technical authority within I&O and with Development teams on cloud and automation.

The Principal Engineer, Cloud Systems is an integral driver of the Healthfirst cloud infrastructure and operational excellence strategy. This role manages enterprise solutions in both public and private clouds while also utilizing tools to automate system deployment and configuration management tasks. The Principal Engineer, Cloud Systems is a Subject Matter Expert (SME), senior technical leader, and key decision maker for Engineers and Sr. Engineers who works collaboratively and/or autonomously in creating solutions. The Principal Engineer, Cloud Systems works with diverse technologies utilizing orchestration tools and automation to eliminate manual operations and create reliable and repeatable service delivery. The role is responsible for establishing standards of usage across our public and private cloud footprint. The Principal Engineer, Cloud Systems works with and mentors’ other engineers to identify efficiency opportunities, eliminate waste, and improve the resiliency of our infrastructure platforms, while working with application development teams to support continuous delivery of new capabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Works vertically and horizontally across the Infrastructure and Operations portfolio supporting private/public cloud systems, operating systems, middleware, storage, database platforms, and other key infrastructure products.
• Assists department leadership by providing informal coaching and direction to I&O Engineering team
• Subject matter expert for advanced analysis and resolution of the most complex issues
• Develops repeatable automation to deliver capabilities more efficiently.
• Devises solutions to problems impacting mission critical systems and implements automation to prevent reoccurrence.
• Supports and implements private cloud Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure (HCI) technologies.
• Plays a senior role within a Center of Excellence for cloud usage and cloud development standards.
• Maintains an accurate picture of existing server, storage, networking, software and hardware and virtual environments to support scaling against various project requirements.
• Ensures all usage of cloud environments meet governance standards and contributes to improving standards for security and operational efficiency.
• Creates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Healthfirst operations teams to support the operations of the products.
• Acts as a senior escalation point for operations and delivery teams for incident and ticket resolution and participates in an on-call rotation.
• Serves as a technical leader within Infrastructure & Operations as well as with Development teams in areas of Cloud technology and automation.
• Other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Technical degree from an accredited institutionor a high school diploma or a GED from an accredited institution with equivalent work experience.
• Experience in designing, building, and managing Linux/Unix-based and Windows systems.
• Extensive cloud experience within Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), etc.
• I&O Engineering work experience including oversight of public and private cloud technologies
• Proven and demonstratable experience with automation scripting tools including BASH, Python and/or PowerShell.
• Extensive Infrastructure as Code (IaC) experience with automation and open-source tools.
• Proven work experience in identifying repeatable processes and partnering with teams to push innovation and automation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Computer Science or Technical field.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
• GCP/Nutanix Certification.
• Experience in a Cloud Center of Excellence and driving business innovation.
• Experience implementing cloud services with an Infrastructure as code methodology using cloud formation, Ansible, or Terraform.
• Experience supporting Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD integration.
• Experience supporting and integrating database services both on-premise, and leveraging cloud hosted technologies.
• Expert understanding of cloud security best practices and implementing a least privileged model of access in AWS.
• Deep troubleshooting skills that involve analysis of logs, network traces, configuration data, automation tools to resolve issues until end-to-end systems are functioning.
• Experience with Kubernetes, deploying, and supporting containerized applications.
• Experience working with development teams as a cloud engineering subject matter expert to create cloud-native applications.
• Experience with system health monitoring and optimizing performance following Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles with leading industry tools.
• Experience working in regulated and/or high-security environments and industries (PCI, HIPAA, HITRUST, etc.).

Hiring Range*:

• Greater New York City Area (NY, NJ, CT residents): $134,600 - $194,480
• All Other Locations (within approved locations): $119,600 - $177,905

As a candidate for this position, your salary and related elements of compensation will be contingent upon your work experience, education, licenses and certifications, and any other factors Healthfirst deems pertinent to the hiring decision.
