Job summary

Boston Materials is seeking a Principal Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing to lead the commissioning and ongoing operation of our high-volume manufacturing lines.

This pivotal role sits at the intersection of materials development and production scale-up, collaborating with equipment and process engineers to design workflows, implement MES, and build the infrastructure to translate development processes into repeatable manufacturing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Materials Science or related engineering field.
• Experience transitioning materials-based processes from development to controlled manufacturing.
• Strong knowledge of SPC, control charts, and capability analysis.
• Experience with IQ/OQ/PQ protocols.

Responsibilities

• Lead commissioning of new high-volume manufacturing equipment from installation to full production readiness.
• Collaborate with equipment and process engineers to design, document, and optimize production workflows.
• Identify and implement MES and digital tools (SCADA, SPC) to support real-time process monitoring and traceability.
• Establish line readiness standards including base state definitions, preventive maintenance programs, SOPs, and validated process windows.
• Translate developmental materials processes into controlled, scalable manufacturing environments.
• Define IQ/OQ/PQ qualification protocols for new equipment and processes.
• Partner with engineers to design experiments that characterize process sensitivity and establish control limits.
• Build and maintain quality management workflows, including non-conformance investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action.
• Champion a culture of safety, organization, and continuous improvement on the manufacturing floor.
• Thrive in a startup environment requiring resourcefulness and cross-functional collaboration.
