Role overview

Lead the technical direction of complex digital products and services as a hands-on Principal Engineer. The role combines architecture, deep engineering judgement, client-facing communication and practical delivery, with a strong focus on producing reliable systems and enabling teams—and AI-assisted development tools—to work effectively. You will operate as a trusted technical expert who can connect engineering decisions to meaningful commercial and user outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Define architectures, technical specifications and engineering approaches that support production-quality delivery.
• Make pragmatic technology and system-design decisions based on the needs and constraints of each product.
• Review code and technical proposals, identifying hidden assumptions, security weaknesses, quality risks and architectural drift.
• Guide teams toward simple, incremental solutions, using documentation and meetings to enable delivery rather than replace it.
• Apply AI development tools thoughtfully, including preparing context, specifications and codebases so these tools can produce dependable results.
• Mentor engineers in AI fluency, prompting, tooling, review practices and the quality controls needed for enterprise work.
• Build trusted relationships with clients, communicate clearly with senior stakeholders and contribute directly within client environments.

Requirements

• Extensive experience designing and delivering robust software systems in production.
• Strong architectural foundations, systems thinking and the judgement to balance technical quality, delivery speed and commercial considerations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain decisions, influence senior audiences and disagree constructively.
• A practical, outcome-focused approach and the ability to choose the smallest solution that works before iterating.
• Current fluency with AI-assisted engineering, including context preparation, critical review and understanding where models commonly fail.
• Confidence working hands-on with engineering teams rather than operating solely as a people manager.
• Ability to work directly with clients, including on-site collaboration when required.
