Job description

The Principal Device Engineer

The Principal Device Engineer is responsible for the design, execution, analysis, and optimization of advanced semiconductor device technologies to enable current and future GLOBALFOUNDRIES CMOS technology platforms. This position provides technical leadership in device engineering activities spanning device design, characterization, variability reduction, reliability assessment, technology optimization, and customer engagement. The successful candidate will work across cross-functional teams including process integration, unit process development, modeling, reliability, DTCO, product engineering, and design enablement to develop industry-leading device solutions. The role requires deep expertise in semiconductor device physics, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to drive complex technical programs from concept through technology qualification and production transfer.

Essential Responsibilities

Lead the design, planning, execution, and analysis of experiments aimed at developing and optimizing advanced CMOS, FinFET, RF and derivative device technologies. Develop and drive device roadmap requirements, electrical targets, and performance metrics aligned with technology and customer needs. Analyze electrical, physical, and reliability data to identify optimization opportunities and define process improvements. Provide technical leadership for device architecture definition, variability reduction, and reliability enhancement activities. Collaborate closely with process integration, FEOL module teams, modeling, reliability, and product engineering organizations to improve device performance and manufacturability. Drive root-cause investigations for device performance, yield, reliability, and technology qualification issues. Define characterization methodologies, test structures, and measurement plans to support technology development and model generation. Translate customer requirements into actionable device targets and technology development objectives. Interface with internal and external customers regarding technology capabilities, device behavior, reliability performance, and design-rule-related topics. Support patent generation, intellectual property development, and technology differentiation initiatives. Present technical findings and recommendations to senior management, customers, and cross-functional leadership teams. Contribute to qualification and production-release activities for new device technologies and derivative product offerings.

Other Responsibilities

Perform all activities in accordance with GLOBALFOUNDRIES Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security requirements. Support continuous improvement initiatives for characterization, data analysis, automation, and experiment execution. Develop and maintain automated data analysis and reporting methodologies. Participate in technical reviews, design reviews, technology assessments, and customer engagements. Contribute to organizational knowledge sharing, technical training, and mentoring programs. Support strategic planning efforts for future technology nodes and platform enhancements. Collaborate with global engineering teams across development and manufacturing sites. Drive innovation through invention disclosures, technical publications, patents, and conference participation.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Semiconductor Engineering, or a related field. Extensive experience in semiconductor device engineering, technology development, or advanced process development. Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and electrical characterization methods. Proven experience in designing and analyzing experiments (DOE) for technology development and optimization. Demonstrated expertise in CMOS, FinFET, RF, analog, memory, or advanced semiconductor device technologies. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex electrical and physical characterization data. Experience collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary engineering organizations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and influence decisions across organizations. Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

Deep knowledge of FEOL semiconductor process integration including gate stack, implant, junction engineering, mobility enhancement, spacer formation, silicide processes, and advanced device architectures. Experience with reliability mechanisms, variability analysis, and technology qualification. Expertise in advanced statistical analysis and large-scale data interpretation. Programming and automation experience using Python, JMP/JSL, R, SQL, or similar tools. Experience with electrical characterization equipment including parameter analyzers, source measurement units (SMUs), and wafer probing systems. Understanding of SPICE modeling, model validation, and model-hardware correlation methodologies. Track record of patent generation, publications, or industry-recognized technical contributions. Experience presenting directly to customers and executive leadership. Demonstrated success leading cross-functional technical teams and mentoring engineers. Experience supporting automotive, RF, eNVM, AI, or advanced compute technologies.
