Job summary

Amentum is seeking a Principal Database Engineer to act as the technical anchor for our database administration team. This role supports the Missile Defense Agency on the IRES contract, spanning Oracle, DB2, Cassandra, MongoDB, and SQL across on-prem and cloud environments.

The successful candidate will bridge teams, guide cloud/container strategies, and mentor DBAs while ensuring security, performance, and reliability across multi-platform systems.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of general (full-time) work experience.
• 3+ years of directly related experience.
• Hands-on experience installing, configuring, and maintaining multiple database platforms (Oracle, DB2, Cassandra, MongoDB, SQL).
• Experience running databases in the cloud, specifically AWS and Azure.
• Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration, including Kubernetes and Docker.
• Act as a technical coordinator and mentor for a team of DBAs, guiding the technical direction.
• Solid background in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and optimizing queries across different database types.
• Experience handling backups, disaster recovery, capacity management, and audits.
• Strong understanding of database security policies and enterprise enforcement.
• Current Security+ certification.
• Active DoW Secret Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the technical anchor for our database administration team and ensure systems work together securely and efficiently.
• Bridge the gap between the database team, developers, and administrators to define data solutions.
• Guide cloud and containerized deployment of databases as we modernize infrastructure.
• Research and test new database technologies for integration into the application lifecycle.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to map database requirements for new projects and initiatives.
