Job summary

Fifth Third Bank, N.A. is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Agentic Engineering team in a hybrid role. Based in Michigan/Ohio/ Texas locations, you will architect and lead a platform where AI agents compose across domains, coordinating tool servers and messaging to deliver reliable automation at scale.

You will mentor engineers, set standards, and drive design decisions while staying hands-on to tackle hard problems and ensure safe, cost-effective agent behavior.

Qualifications

• 8-12+ years of software engineering experience with deep proficiency in Python and TypeScript.
• Track record of technically driving teams of engineers — mentoring, setting standards, and shipping complex systems.
• Experience building agentic or multi-step automated systems — tool orchestration, LLM reasoning loops, or agent frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of software engineers building production agents — setting direction, reviewing designs, mentoring, and unblocking.
• Define the team’s engineering standards — agent patterns, tool integration, testing, code quality, observability, and review practices.
• Architect the agent platform — shared services and protocols that let agents discover and compose reliably.
• Stay hands-on — write code, prototype hard problems, and pair with engineers on tough parts of the system.
• Own the quality and safety of agent behavior — design how the team verifies agents stay accurate, cost-efficient, and within guardrails.
• Translate vision into a roadmap — break a platform vision into shippable increments.
• Represent the team to leadership — communicate architecture, trade-offs, and progress.
