Job summary

UCI Health is seeking an Admit Clerk to schedule patients for surgery and diagnostics, ensuring all paperwork is complete and forwarded to the right departments. You will verify funding coverage and coordinate with physicians, admissions, and the operating room to confirm dates and times.

You will input demographic and financial data in the SMS System, maintain accurate records, and communicate wait times and changes clearly to patients and teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year experience registering patients in a hospital or clinic.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication.
  • Ability to travel to off-site physician practices.
  • Familiarity with ICD9 and CPT codes.
  • Experience using MS Office.
  • Weekend, holiday, and evening availability.
  • Knowledge of university/medical center policies (preferred).

Your Role on the Team
Position Summary
Under supervision of the Admit Worker Supervisor, responsible for scheduling clinic patients for surgery and diagnostic procedures. Assures all necessary paperwork is completed and forwarded to appropriate departments. Assists in determining if the patient\'s source of funding covers proposed surgery/procedure and inquires about expiration dates. Determines that physician documentation reflects need for proposed surgery/procedure. Obtains surgery/procedure date and time based on physician availability and operating room schedule. Communicates effectively with patients in order to obtain demographic and financial data. Provides accurate wait time estimates when available. Acts as a liaison between admissions, other departments and operating room. Notifies departments, services, physicians and the patient if surgery/procedure date/time is rescheduled and updates all as necessary. Responsible for inputting demographic and financial data into the SMS System following basic computer flows and codes.

Required Qualifications
What It Takes to be Successful
  • Previous experience with computer registration and registration scheduling system
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Must demonstrate general understanding of medical terminology
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Must be able to travel to off site physician practices
  • Minimum one (1) year recent experience (within past two (2) years) registering patients in a hospital or clinic, working as a Medical Assistant, or working in medical billing
  • General knowledge of ICD9 and CPT codes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Office
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Ability to interpret and understand various medical insurance plans and make accurate determinations regarding coverage
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
  • Familiarity of Joint Commission standards
  • Experience with Epic
  • Experience in surgical scheduling
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
