General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (OGS) seeks a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design for solid rocket motor systems. You will create CAD/models, develop drawings and specs for motor cases, nozzles, insulation, joints, and interfaces, and integrate sub-assemblies.

The role supports remote or on-site work at Huntsville, AL; Niceville, FL; or Hampton, AR, with travel up to 25% and a focus on mission-critical propulsion hardware.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree and 8-10 years' engineering experience required.
  • Discipline: Engineering; proficiency with CAD/CAE tools and MS Office.
  • Preferred qualifications include strong design and analysis capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed thermal analysis of solid rocket motor components.
  • Size internal insulation, external thermal protection systems, and structural insulators.
  • Validate models with test data; develop predictive ablation/erosion models.
  • Define sub-scale tests for material properties of insulators/ablators.
  • Evaluate and recommend ablative materials and thermal protection system solutions.
  • Create reports and presentations documenting analysis work.
  • Present to peers and customers in design reviews.

The ideal candidate will have experience as Mechanical Design Engineer for solid rocket motors. That would include Mechanical Design Integration of Solid Propulsion Systems, mechanical system design, mass properties and integrating all sub-assemblies. They will be responsible for the design, development, and integration of mechanical components used in solid rocket motor systems. This role focuses on creating CAD models, engineering drawings, and specifications for critical hardware such as motor cases, nozzles, insulation systems, joints, and structural interfaces. This position can be remote or at our Huntsville, AL, Niceville FL, or Hampton, AR facility. Impact of the RoleGeneral Profile

  • Specifies system components or directs modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Investigates equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and makes recommendations to maintenance crew.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time.

  • Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
  • Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.
  • May be requested to work a different shift.
