Salary Range: $27.66 To $29.04 Annually

POSITION PROFILE:

The Prevention Specialist is responsible for the development and ongoing support for community outreach efforts related to implementing the Youth Unite project, to address alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use and community-level safety in San Diego’s high school and middle school youth community. Outgoing community engagement and flexibility required. Availability to work occasional Saturdays is required. This part-time position is not benefit eligible.

This is a temporary position scheduled to end on April 30 th , 2027. Possible extension is contingent upon funding opportunity.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of capacity building interventions for youth, young adults, and community members to support their efforts to address ATOD and/or crime prevention solutions.
  • Engage youth through on-campus Youth Unite programming centered on connecting with natural and cultural resources in or adjacent to their communities through field trips.
  • Organize and facilitate field trips to culturally relevant and or local natural sites across San Diego.
  • Promote cross-sector collaboration through partnership development to reduce youth and adult substance use.
  • Support Youth Unite’s social media presence with content development and posting at regular intervals.
  • Support youth-led planning efforts to reduce ATOD and/or public health concerns to implement focused strategies with specific goals and objectives.
  • Engage agencies, partner organizations, partner schools, local government, school boards, civil society groups, and other collaborative partners as stakeholders and allies.
  • Research, identify, and implement Evidence-Based Programs that address ATOD critical
  • issues and or barriers to equitable access of natural and cultural resources, such as the Youth-Led Participatory Research framework.
  • Create and present educational ATOD prevention and/or crime prevention materials for youth, young adults, community members, and partner agencies.
  • Plan and organize educational opportunities to implement a collective impact model approach to prevention.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Certifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Psychology, Public Health, Education, Social Work, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum one (1) year of relevant leadership experience in providing prevention services in a community setting.
  • At least one (1) year of prevention services experience to include one (1) or more ATOD-related and/or public health prevention campaigns.
  • Possess general knowledge of multi-system collaboration to affect organizational and systems changes to reduce the harm and negative impact of ATOD and or related public health conditions or problems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of socio-economic challenges and multicultural issues affecting the communities where program schools are located
  • Demonstrated experience building rapport and collaborating with youth
  • Experience working with a broad range of diverse ethnicities, backgrounds, cultures, and socioeconomic populations
  • Strong initiative, self-directed, and ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule that includes some weekends, as needed
  • Access to reliable transportation and willingness to use for job-related tasks
