Job summary

Location: Espanola, NM

Status: Non-exempt, regular full-time (40 hours/week), Level II

Rate: $20.60/hour (Please note that our offer process does not include negotiation on salaries and benefits, which can create inequities in pay across the organization.)

The Environmental Justice (EJ) Project Coordinator II is primarily responsible for coordinating and implementing Environmental Justice initiatives related to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), representing Tewa Women United (TWU) on priority coalitions as they relate to protection of Tribal Nations land, air and water including legislative initiatives impacting Native women and girls. This position also provides support, as needed, for Food and Seed Sovereignty projects and initiatives. The EJ Project Coordinator II assists with the planning, coordination, and implementation of projects that advance environmental justice priorities related to land, air, water, and food sovereignty. The position works collaboratively with cross-functional teams, community members, volunteers, partner organizations, Tribal communities, and government agencies to support project implementation and community engagement. The EJ Project Coordinator II also supports program implementation strategies, monitors progress toward project objectives, and assists in meeting grant requirements and deliverables in accordance with program goals and organizational priorities.

Duties And Responsibilities

Primary Duties

• Lead the coordination and implementation of the various EJ projects including but not limited to initiatives around LANL accountability and protection of land, air water.
• Provide support as requested around other EJ projects as requested.
• Help in the development and implementation of EJ Program goals, strategies, objectives and grant deliverables.
• Assist the EJ Program Manager in designing and implementing the projects, including building community networks, developing distribution practices, acquiring tools, and creating educational resources.
• Oversee day-to-day project activities with supervision from the EJ Program Manager, including coordinating workshops, events, and training that impact and benefit the tribes and communities located in Northern New Mexico, primarily the Espanola-Pojoaque Valley. .
• Assist in identifying environmental justice (EJ) opportunities and promoting equity in TWU’s work by collaborating with TWU Leaders, the EJ Program team,TWU staff, and subject matter experts.
• Work with partner organizations to increase access to EJ advocacy, traditional food, seeds, and holistic medicines in the northern Pueblos and the Espanola Valley.
• Work with partner organizations to increase protection of land, air and waters in the northern Pueblos and the Espanola Valley.
• Respond to inquiries from the community, coalitions, partners, and TWU staff, providing timely and accurate information.
• Draft and submit community testimony, organization position statement and action alerts.
• Keep awareness of and identify when TWU should enter into actions that increase public support and that are in alignment with TWU values.
• Ensure accurate record-keeping of all EJ project activities and complete post event surveys along with monthly reports to the EJ Program Manager and Grant & Compliance Specialist.
• Turn in sign-in sheets, invoices, expense receipts, and financial paperwork on a biweekly basis, including credit card purchases to the TWU Office and Program Support Coordinator.
• Process mileage and personal reimbursements on a monthly basis and input into Monday.com.
• Input, update and maintain weekly Google Calendars, Monday.com and productivity tools for staff hours, staff work plans, program activities, events, and training.
• Attend and provide EJ project updates at TWU monthly in-person staff meetings, EJ staff meetings and other relevant meetings or training.
• Support in editing, revising, and updating EJ materials for outreach, newsletters, social media, and articles as needed.

Outreach/Community Building

• Proactively address EJ issues in Northern New Mexico as a subject matter expert, focusing on outreach and engagement with communities disproportionately affected by environmental and public health issues.
• Attend in-person and virtual events and community meetings as a TWU representative with Program Manager approval to build and maintain supportive relationships with key decision makers and community members/organizations, including local, municipal, state, national, and tribal entities or advocacy groups.
• Host, attend, and participate in coalition meetings, public meetings, legislative sessions, and conferences related to EJ as approved and/ or requested by EJ Program Manager and TWU Directors.
• Participate in interviews and help write articles on environmental justice issues as needed.
• Actively coordinate and collaborate on community engagement efforts, including strategy development and implementation, with EJ staff or other TWU staff as needed.

Training and Classes

• Create, present, and facilitate EJ workshops, activities, and training from a land-based and “Nava Toi Yiya” perspective.
• Conduct and present research, gather data, and prepare educational materials, talking points, and briefings on EJ issues related to Los Alamos National Laboratory and its operations and impacts on Native women and children and tribal nations in northern New Mexico.

Opide – Campaign/Movement Building and Connection

• Coordinate and support other TWU Programs as needed and indicated in the scope of work with supervisory pre-approval.
• Engage with network partners and community members for meetings, decision making, and processes of collaboratively designing and implementing participatory research (i.e., land, air, and water) and data collection when needed.
• Assist in coordinating and implementing TWU’s environmental education and climate crisis campaign(s).
• Host, attend, and participate in campaigns/ events related to EJ as approved by EJ Program Manager and TWU Directors.
• Revise, edit, and ensure EJ outreach information is accurate, updated, and available for outreach events and TWU website on a regular basis, in collaboration with the TWU Communications Consultant.
• Collaborate and support in general TWU fundraising strategy as requested.

Perform other duties as assigned by EJ Program Manager and TWU Directors.

Minimum Position Qualifications

• Associate degree in a related field (i.e Environmental Science, Environmental Biology, Environmental Justice, Environmental Management/studies, Natural Resources, Permaculture, Biology, Conservation, Agriculture, Forestry, Fire Science, Geography, Public Health, Sociology, Environmental Law, Public administration with an environmental emphasis, or a closely related field). An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted, as long as it directly relates to the essential duties and responsibilities.
• Experience in development, implementation, and ongoing program coordination.
• Demonstrates ability to clearly establish goals and objectives, plan/organize activities and projects.
• Demonstrates good negotiation skills, works independently, and demonstrates good judgment.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Strong written, verbal, and listening communication skills to effectively and respectfully work with a diversity of audiences and situations.
• Ability to utilize computer equipment, software and other electronic devices to perform work effectively and efficiently is desirable.
• Working knowledge with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Monday.com, Google and database management software is preferred.
• Strong group management skills.
• Multilingualism is preferred – Spanish, Indigenous/Tribal languages.
• Knowledge and practice of collaborative problem-solving conflict resolution, participatory planning, and community-based research/assessment.
• Comfortable discussing environmental and social justice, racism, and social and economic inequalities.
• Experience with experiential learning and teaching styles, and working with diverse groups.
• Ability to interact with a variety of personnel at different levels of responsibility.
