Job summary

The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) seeks a Preschool Substitute Teacher to support the Preschool team at IRCO Early Beginnings Preschool in Portland, Oregon. You will help with daily activities, implement licensed guidelines, and promote a safe, engaging learning environment for young children.

Required is high-level proficiency in written and spoken English; bilingual ability is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School or GED and less than one year of experience required.
  • Enrollment in Oregon Central Background Registry preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and a second language preferred; multicultural familiarity valued.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Support the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of students under the guidance of the Preschool teaching team.
  • Maintain an environment that is welcoming, clean, organized, and safe for all children.
  • Promote a multilingual/multi-background, family-engaged environment.
  • Adhere to licensing requirements and guidelines for Preschool settings.
  • Assist children with activities of daily life and foster independence.

Requirements

Program Summary

The Preschool Team’s purpose is to provide safe and full participation in learning environments, developmentally appropriate activities, and gentle guidance for the children in their care.

Position Summary

The Preschool Substitute Teacher works under the guidance of the Preschool teaching team to support the wellbeing and development of the children in their care while following Oregon state licensing guidelines and early childhood best practices.

Essential Functions
  • Support the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of students under the guidance of the Preschool teaching team.
  • Maintain an environment that is welcoming, clean, organized, and safe for all children.
  • Promote a multilingual/multi-background, family-engaged environment.
  • Adhere to all Preschool Promise and Oregon Child Care Center licensing requirements and guidelines.
  • Assist children with activities of daily life (e.g., restroom use, feeding, dressing); support children to build independence and develop healthy habits.
  • Promote health and safety by following cleaning and sanitizing procedures throughout the day and when closing the classroom.
  • Observe strict confidentiality with records of children’s health, development, and medication administration following IRCO Preschool Policies and Procedures.
  • Establish a professional level of rapport with each family to provide quality care and friendly service.
Secondary Functions
  • Support the teaching team to complete all necessary paperwork in a timely manner, including archiving weekly lesson plans and student/staff attendance.
Education & Experience
Minimum Job Specific Qualifications
  • High School or GED
  • Less than one year of experience is required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Enrollment in the Oregon Central Background Registry.
  • Some coursework and/or community-based training in child development and early education theories and practices preferred.
  • At least 6 months of experience working with young children.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge and understanding of immigrant and refugee cultures and local populations.
  • Bilingual in English and a second language preferred, and experience/ability to work in multi-background environment and communicate clearly orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.
  • Compassionate with the ability to adapt to stressful conditions and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to function in a positive manner in a demanding work environment, to demonstrate a high degree of flexibility, to respond to priorities and schedules that change frequently, and to meet commitments.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills with varied communities; communicate in a positive manner verbally, in writing, and by phone to individuals and groups; communicate with a variety of personality types and levels of the organization as well as with people outside of the organization.
  • Must be punctual, maintain a good attendance record, and be able to work flexible hours to meet the availability of program needs.
Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements
  • In‑person, classroom setting with daily time outdoors
  • Physical: Positions at this level require some physical efforts or manual labor such as lifting, carrying or constant movement. Positions with regular responsibility for driving are to be placed at least at this level.
  • Mental: Duties are mostly comprised of routine and repeated tasks
  • Environment: There is a moderately low level of personal risk encountered. Job conditions are occasionally uncomfortable relative to noise, temperature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, or interactions with angry or hostile people
  • Schedule: The work schedule is mostly stable and does not fluctuate without prior notice.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory functions, or responsibilities, but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers.
