JOB SUMMARY:

Assist students in the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of: understanding of the experiences, working and living conditions, language, and culture of the migrant society; specific curriculum content and best instructional practices for working with preschool children. Skilled in: lesson plan development; implementation of learning activities; behavior management; assessment; teaching to individual student levels; basic computer literacy. Ability to: communicate orally and in writing in both Spanish and English; represent the program to the migrant students and parents; maintain accurate records; advocate for the student in the home and school settings; and build relationships with students, parents, and staff; work with a diverse population of students and parents. Flexible and willing to do a variety of jobs to meet deadlines and complete all required training. Requires native fluency in Spanish and excellent communication skills with speakers of both English and Spanish.

Experience: Experience in a pre-kindergarten setting

Education: Two years of college, associate's degree or passing score on a para-professional exam in reading, writing and math as required by federal law.

Certification Required: Medic First Aid Card; Valid Oregon Driver's License and automobile insurance in order to provide own transportation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with supervising teachers, principal, students, and patrons to support student learning in the classroom.
  • Work in partnership with the Welcome Center staff to enhance communication and maximize services to students and families.
  • Translate in oral and written communication the instructional needs of the Pre-Kindergarten program to parents, students, and patrons of the Newberg School District.
  • Maintain confidentiality of students and programs .
  • Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Language Skills: Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language. Ability to write memoranda, correspondence, lesson plans, reports, and student achievement summaries in both English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in both English and Spanish. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work collaboratively, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, staff, students, parents and community.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and may be continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must be able to lift and or move up to 10 pounds. The employee may be required to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time.

Work Environment: Works in a classroom environment in close proximity to students and other adults. May encounter students with emotional problems or hostile attitudes. Able to use a telephone, operate a computer, and use other office equipment. Able to drive to other program sites and meetings.

Terms of Employment: Works when migrant preschool is in session. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on the evaluation of Classified personnel.

CLASSIFICATION/LOCATION: Classified, full-time position Edwards Elementary

CALENDAR: 7 hours per day when school is in session, 185-day contract.

SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary Range 8 of the 2026-27 Classified Wage ScheduleSalary TBD ( $19.11 - $24.31 per the 2025-26 Classified Salary Schedule).

Newberg School District pays 6% PERS contribution provides a generous insurance cap and long-term disability insurance. Optional Life, AD&D insurance, Short Term Disability, Tax Shelter Annuities, Section 125 health and dependent care accounts, and Employee Assistance Program through Uprise Behavioral Health also available to all staff.
