Job summary

School of the Madeleine in San Diego is seeking a part-time Preschool Assistant (19 hours per week, M-F) to support classroom teachers and supervise children.

The role requires ECE units and knowledge of child care best practices, with preferred Catholic school alignment. Applicants must pass background clearances and TB testing; prior licensed preschool experience is a plus.

Qualifications

• Must have completed 12 ECE units or 3 ECE units and be enrolled in more units (transcripts provided).
• Previous experience in a licensed preschool or early development center preferred.
• Live Scan Fingerprint and CMG Background Clearance.
• Cleared TB test to work in a licensed child care facility.
• Familiarity with Roman Catholic Church structure and practices.
• Passion to work with young children and grow as an educator.
• Works well with others and demonstrates a positive attitude.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Teacher to create and deliver lesson plans and with curriculum.
• Oversee outdoor activities, ensuring a safe environment at all times.
• Assist the teacher with rest time and prep work.
• Provide children with support and care during lunchtime and rest periods.
• Respect individual children's needs, backgrounds, and learning styles.
• Sit on the floor, kneel or crouch to assist children.
• Be enthusiastic, patient and nurturing; treat children with dignity and respect.
• Share in housekeeping duties after children depart or are supervised by another teacher.
• Participate in training programs, conferences and other professional growth activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Teaching Responsibilities

• Assist the Teacher to create and deliver lesson plans, and assist with school curriculum
• Oversees outdoor activities ensuring a safe environment for the children at all times
• Assist the teacher with rest time and prep work
• Provides children with support and care during lunchtime and rest time
• Respecting and honoring the needs of the individual children with concern for their interests, special needs, talents, and individual style and pace of learning
• Considering individual children in relationship to their cultural and socioeconomic background
• Able to sit on the floor, kneel or crouch down to assist children’s needs
• Must be enthusiastic, patient and nurturing
• Treating children with dignity and respect
• Assuming an equal share of the joint housekeeping responsibilities of the staff after the children have either departed or are under the supervision of another teacher
• Participating in recommended training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth
• Other duties as assigned

Religious Qualifications

• Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)
• Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy

Professional Qualifications

• Must have completed 12 ECE units or completed a minimum of 3 ECE units and enrolled in more units (Copy of transcripts provided)
• Previous experience in a licensed preschool or early development center (preferred)
• Live Scan Fingerprint and CMG Background Clearance
• Cleared TB test to work in a Licensed Child Care Facility
• Familiarity with the organizational structure and practices of the Roman Catholic Church
• Passion to work with young children and desire to grow as an educator
• Works well with others
• Has a positive attitude and enthusiasm

Physical Requirements
To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the teacher must:

• Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstrating
• Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
• Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfaces
• Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending
• Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class
• Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.
