Job summary

The Weitz Company is seeking an Industrial/Mechanical Preconstruction Manager in Des Moines, IA. You will lead preconstruction efforts, coordinate with trades, and drive cost and schedule predictions to set up projects for success.

You will oversee estimation accuracy, participate in leadership decisions, and mentor team members while aligning with company values and project profitability goals. This role requires travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Eight (8) years of extensive estimating and/or project management experience in industrial-related construction.
  • Strong abilities in communication, leadership, and mentoring with a value-added approach.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accuracy of estimating, scheduling, strategy and communication throughout the preconstruction process.
  • Coordinate building systems and schedules with trade partners and design/build teams for budget and safety.
  • Make timely decisions and escalate risks to leadership as needed.
  • Drive standardization of operating practices and reporting across business units.
  • Collaborate to ensure profitable project handoffs with complete documentation.
  • Understand client needs, logistics, and LEAN/BIM utilization for project efficiency.
  • Establish positive relationships with clients, vendors, and subcontractors; lead preconstruction meetings.
  • Adhere to company policies and participate in travel as required.

Candidates must have previous industrial, mechanical, and piping experience. Power/Energy experience preferred. The Preconstruction Manager is responsible for providing outstanding customer service and setting up medium-size to large, complex, projects up for success through delivery of preconstruction services, development and delivery of preconstruction services. Value should be provided to customers by leading the project team and design consultants, predicting cost and schedule, advocating for owners and seamlessly transitioning preconstruction services to the operations team. This role will provide oversight and leadership to assigned internal employees.

What You’ll Do
  • Responsible for accuracy of all estimating, scheduling, strategy and communication throughout preconstruction process
  • Review weekly preconstruction process to ensure progress is on schedule; initiate changes to remain on schedule; advise leadership of issues that may pose a cost or schedule impact
  • Coordinate building systems and schedules with trade partners, the operations and engineering team and design/build construction team to plan and budget for safety on each project
  • Make decisions in a timely manner; understand when to involve upper management in decisions; assess level of risk and consequences associated
  • Drive standardization of operating practices, business processes and reporting among business units
  • Collaborate with operations, business development, preconstruction team members and other stakeholders to ensure projects are turned over for success with the expected level of profitability, and complete and accurate documentation is given at construction hand-off
  • Understand the clients’ needs to manage the process efficiently, ensure timely completion, understand local logistics/subcontractor and supplier market, and how BIM/LEED/LEAN can be best utilized
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, vendors, subcontractors and co-workers; initiate third party relationships when opportunities arise
  • Lead preconstruction meetings, when appropriate
  • Adhere to all company policies, standards, and procedures
  • Other duties and projects as assigned
  • Business travel will be required
What We’re Looking For
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or an industry related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience: A minimum of eight (8) years’ experience of extensive estimating and/or project management in industrial-related construction field is required. Proven history of leading, teaching, developing and mentoring others successfully.
  • Skills: Independent judgment, business acumen, client relations, negotiation, decision‑making, conflict resolution, problem solving, effective internal and external communication, project management, team leadership, tact, adaptability and analytical abilities are all necessary skills for a Senior Preconstruction Manager. Candidates must also have the ability to accurately evaluate and interpret technical drawings. Demonstrate behaviors consistent with Weitz core values while maintaining a "value added" approach to preconstruction.
  • Technology: Proficiency with operating systems and basic computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. Employee must have experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Timberline Estimating and the ability to learn other specific software.
