Job summary

U.S. Engineering seeks an Assistant Preconstruction Manager to support design, budgeting, and coordination through the preconstruction phase for projects up to and beyond $5 million in value.

You will assist in forming cost estimates, developing preliminary budgets, and coordinating with Project Managers, Field personnel, and vendors to ensure scope control and schedule alignment. A Mechanical/Construction background is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Science/Management, or Architectural Engineering preferred.
  • Equivalent technical training and related experience will be considered.
  • Preferred 1 to 5 years of technical or administrative experience in HVAC, piping, and plumbing at a commercial, industrial, or institutional level.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in conceptually finishing the design on incomplete design documents.
  • Review/evaluate project design documents for cost impact and schedule impact.
  • Support the Preconstruction Manager in the design progress on design-assist and design-build projects regarding scope control, schedule impact, and coordination.
  • Serve as a resource for Project Managers and Field personnel on design issues.
  • Assist with the electrical and general coordination of design-assist and design-build projects.
  • Assist with generating budget estimates and defining scope with incomplete design information.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a preliminary estimating method, format, and process that meets our estimating goals.
  • Update preliminary estimates until the final design is complete.
  • Update and maintain a database of estimating information from past projects.
  • Manage small project budgeting, with support from a Project Manager as needed.
  • Proficient use of the USEC Pricing/Bid Sheet.
  • Provide relevant information to the Operations Team to assist in maintaining the project schedule until preconstruction ends.
  • Assist the Project Manager with updates for equipment and material lead times.
  • Develop and foster effective peer-to-peer relationships with clients.
  • Take a supporting role in the RFP process during development and interview prep.
  • Develop and foster effective relationships with internal clients, vendors, and subs.
  • Attend learning opportunities throughout the industry, including internal and external educational presentations, and other trade-related events.
  • Highly encourage participation in USEC extracurricular activities, committees, philanthropy, etc.

Job description

Primary Purpose: Assists the Preconstruction Manager with various project development-related functions, including project designs and budgets, from inception through the preconstruction phase, and continues to act as a resource throughout the project construction project.

Principal Duties and Accountabilities:

Design / Engineering:
  • Assist in conceptually finishing the design on incomplete design documents.
  • Review/evaluate project design documents for cost impact and schedule impact.
  • Support the Preconstruction Manager in the design progress on design-assist and design-build projects regarding scope control, schedule impact, and coordination.
  • Serve as a resource for Project Managers and Field personnel on design issues.

Estimating:
  • Assist with generating budget estimates and defining scope with incomplete design information.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a preliminary estimating method, format, and process that meets our estimating goals.

  • Manage small project budgeting, with support from a Project Manager as needed. This includes leading Pricing Review/Kick-off meetings with Operations, Estimating, and VC.

Operations Coordination:
  • Provide relevant information to the Operations Team to assist in maintaining the project schedule until preconstruction ends.
  • Assist the Project Manager with updates for equipment and material lead times.
Career/Business Development:

Job Scope: The scope of work may vary, from working on one large project to several smaller projects. The Assistant Preconstruction Manager will assist or manage project designs and budgets through the preconstruction phase, for projects ranging up to or beyond $5 million in mechanical value.

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Science/Management, or Architectural Engineering preferred.
  • Equivalent technical training and related experience will be considered.
  • Preferred 1 to 5 years of technical or administrative experience in HVAC, piping, and plumbing at a commercial, industrial, or institutional level.

Physical and/or travel demands:
  • Routine driving to project sites is required. Work will be done in a combination of office and job site environments.
  • Physical demands include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, and lifting. Position includes sitting and standing, keyboard, and computer monitor.
  • Light travel may be required.
Benefits and Compensation:
  • The range for this position has been established at $75,760.00 - $107,011.00 per yearand is US Engineering’s good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of the posting. The compensation offered to the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
