Job summary

Sulzer is seeking a skilled Machinist at our La Porte Service Center to machine and refurbish turbine components using conventional tools. You will set up lathes, mills, and HBMs, hold tight tolerances, and inspect via precision instruments.

Responsibilities include reading drawings, selecting tooling and speeds, and safely handling heavy components with cranes. A strong background in turbine or heavy‑industrial machining is preferred, with a 12‑day per outage schedule availability.

Qualifications

• 3–5+ years of experience operating manual lathes, mills, and conventional machining equipment.
• Strong proficiency with 4‑jaw chuck setups and precision indicating.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and repair procedures.
• Must supply basic personal hand tools.
• Willingness to work a 12‑day, 10‑hour schedule during outage seasons.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, HBMs, VTLs, and related machining equipment.
• Perform advanced 4‑jaw chuck setups, indicating, and alignment of irregular components.
• Machine turbine components such as IGVs, diaphragms, rings, shafts, sleeves, and split casings.
• Achieve and verify tight tolerances (typical ±0.001") as drawings specify.
• Conduct dimensional inspections using micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and calipers.
• Read and interpret blueprints, repair drawings, travelers, and work instructions.
• Select tooling, speeds, feeds, and methods for each job.
• Safely handle large/heavy components using cranes, lifts, and rigging.
