GENERAL SUMMARY

Saginaw Public Schools Teachers are responsible for planning, organizing and implementing an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences
2. Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs
3. Teaches District approved curriculum
4. Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement
5. Maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures
6. Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
7. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis
8. Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment
9. Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community. Assumes responsibility for meeting course and school‑wide student performance goals
10. Assistance with toileting needs
11. Effectively direct and utilize a classroom assistant (aide) in order to carry out daily tasks supporting the instructional needs of the students in the classroom.
12. Make home visits if needed
13. Conduct developmental screenings and assessments
14. Write goals and objectives, and be able to write IEP's and IFSP's
15. Schedule IEP/IFSP's with appropriate personnel
16. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor
17. Plans individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social, and motor skills such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others, and using equipment
18. Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal instruction of pupils with wide range of mental, physical, and emotional ability levels
19. Encourages pupils to express themselves creatively in art, music, and dramatic play
20. Provides appropriate climate to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes and social skills
21. Provides individual and small group instruction designed to meet individual needs of pupils in communications skills, health habits, physical skills, and development of self‑concepts

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

1. State of Michigan teacher certificate required
2. Must possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in at least one area of special education and a major or minor in early childhood education or child growth and development.(Candidates who have a ZA or ZS endorsement with a special education endorsement do not need this approval.)
3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of preschool special needs school curriculum and philosophy, effective instruction principles, assessment procedures and learning as well as behavioral supports and plans
4. Demonstrates the personal qualities of an effective teacher including the ability to collaborate with other staff and the ability to communicate well with a wide variety of audiences both in writing and verbally
5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and, to coordinate and direct the work of others
6. Demonstrated ability to interact proactive with parents
7. Prior knowledge of state standards and assessment tools
