Job description

All Saints Episcopal School is seeking a Pre-First Teacher to begin November 2, 2026, and serve through the end of the 2026-2027 school year.
PRE-FIRST TEACHER
Position Summary

The Pre-First Teacher provides an additional year of academic and developmental support for students who would benefit from more time between Kindergarten and First Grade. Students may be placed in Pre-First because of academic needs, social or emotional development, maturity, or simply because they are among the younger students in their grade.

The Pre-First Teacher is responsible for understanding the individual needs of each student and providing differentiated instruction designed to strengthen academic skills, develop independence and confidence, and prepare each student for success in First Grade. The teacher recognizes that students enter Pre-First with different strengths and areas for growth and develops instruction accordingly.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Develop a strong understanding of each student's academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs.
  • Use assessment data, classroom observations, student work, and other information to identify individual strengths and areas requiring additional development.
  • Provide differentiated instruction that meets students where they are academically while moving each student toward First Grade readiness.
  • Develop individualized goals and instructional strategies for students based on their specific needs.
  • Provide targeted instruction, reinforcement, practice, and enrichment in reading, writing, mathematics, and other academic areas as appropriate.
  • Strengthen foundational literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written expression.
  • Strengthen foundational mathematics skills, including number sense, computation, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning.
  • Continuously monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on student performance and growth.
  • Provide additional challenge for students who are ready to move beyond grade-level expectations while providing appropriate support for students who need additional instruction and practice.
  • Develop students' independence, organization, work habits, perseverance, and confidence as learners.
  • Support students in developing the social and emotional skills necessary for success in First Grade.
  • Establish clear expectations, routines, and procedures that promote a positive, supportive, and productive classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with Kindergarten and First Grade teachers to understand expectations and ensure students are developing the skills necessary for a successful transition to First Grade.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, areas of strength, areas for growth, and strategies for continued development.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and document instructional interventions and student growth.
  • Participate in grade-level, Lower School, and faculty meetings and contribute to discussions regarding student needs and instructional practices.

Instructional Expectations

The Pre-First Teacher should:

  • Know each student well and understand why the student is in Pre-First and what the student needs to be successful.
  • Teach the student, not simply the curriculum, using flexibility and professional judgment to determine the appropriate level of instruction.
  • Differentiate consistently in content, process, pacing, practice, and assessment.
  • Use data to drive instruction and regularly evaluate whether students are making appropriate progress.
  • Maintain high expectations while recognizing that students may reach those expectations through different paths.
  • Prepare students for First Grade by intentionally developing the academic skills, independence, maturity, and confidence necessary for the next grade level.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
  • Appropriate teaching certification preferred.
  • Elementary teaching experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of foundational literacy and mathematics instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction for students with varied academic and developmental needs.
