Responsibilities
  • Clinical Care: The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA works in collaboration with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law and hospital regulations, hospital policy, protocols and clinical pathways and may provide autonomous team-based care. Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates and manages patient treatment plans. The NP/PA may perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, and may have autonomous practice in certain specialties. The NP/PA may also function as first or second assistant on operative cases when within scope and prerequisites. Other clinical duties may be provided as needed and in alignment with departmental and operational goals, including response to emergencies within YNHHS parameters.
  • Patient Education & Psychosocial Support: Educate patients/families on care and resources; provide psychosocial support as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Information Management: Ensure appropriate documentation in compliance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protect information from unauthorized access or disclosure.
  • Quality Management: Demonstrate professional behavior and commitment to patient care; ensure compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
  • Professional Development: Engage in projects to maintain and advance professional competency; may serve as a clinical resource, preceptor, mentor, and collaborate on research, quality improvement, and protocol development.
Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.

Experience

  • Clinical working experience as an NP/PA in the specialty/service line is preferred but not required. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the affiliated medical staff and go through credentialing; evidence of current competence and references may be required.

Licensure

  • Active PA Certification by NCCPA, Connecticut State PA License, ACLS/BLS as indicated for position. DEA license may be required. PALS/NRP as indicated for neonatal care. Additional licensure and continuing education may be required based on position and specialty.
