Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a Powerline Worker to install, locate, maintain, and repair electric utility distribution systems on campus. You will work under supervision and may lead crew members in the Lead Powerline Worker’s absence.

Must hold a CDL with endorsements and demonstrate journeyman-level knowledge of power distribution. Expect to work 40 hours per week, with potential for irregular hours during emergencies.

Qualifications

• Valid CDL with endorsements.
• Journeyman level knowledge of primary/secondary distribution.
• Underground and overhead distribution construction knowledge.
• Understanding of hot line work.
• Team daily collaboration.
• Willing to work extra/irregular hours (storms, etc).
• Independent work with supervision.
• Install and maintain street lights.
• Investigate power failures and restore power.
• Document work for system records.
• Commitment to safety and OSHA standards (CPR/First Aid).
• Share knowledge with crew.

Responsibilities

• Install, locate, maintain, and repair electric distribution systems.
• Lead other line crew in absence of Lead Powerline Worker.
• Maintain safety protocols and follow policies.
• Assist town crews during emergencies.
• Document work for system records.
• Investigate outages and restore power during emergencies.
