Job summary

FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is seeking qualified engineers for transmission modeling and related tasks. The role includes short circuit impedance modeling for transmission and sub-transmission lines, substations, and transformers, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance, with collaboration across PJM and ReliabilityFirst.

The position requires a BSEE/BSCE/BSME from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent), plus FE certification preferred and at least 2 years

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program (BSEE/BSCE/BSME) is required or an acceptable alternative listed above.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform short circuit impedance modeling of transmission and subtransmission lines, substations, and transformers to ensure accuracy and NERC compliance.
  • Model impedances, air switch capability, and power flow aspects.
  • Collaborate with PJM, ReliabilityFirst, and other utilities on transmission modeling and resolution of discrepancies.
  • Develop and maintain applications, queries, and macros to support engineering work.
  • Participate in industry working groups to advance transmission engineering practices.
  • Strive to increase internal and external customer satisfaction and foster external partnerships.

About The Opportunity

Location: Onsite - Akron OH, Fairmont WV, Greensburg PA, Reading PA

Responsibilities
  • Short circuit impedance modeling of the transmission and sub-transmission lines, system interconnections, transmission and sub-transmission substations and transformers to ensure system accuracy, compliance with NERC standards and reliable operation.
  • Modeling impedances of lines and transformers, air switch capability, and modeling aspects of power flow models.
  • Performing transmission modeling activities with the operating companies, other utilities, nonutility customer load/generation, PJM, and ReliabilityFirst.
  • Discussions and resolutions to modeling discrepancies, questions and compliance concerns.
  • Developing and maintaining applications, queries, and macros.
  • Actively participate on industry working groups and forums to ensure the FirstEnergy is viewed as an engaged leader in transmission activities.
  • Continually seek opportunities to increase internal and external customer satisfaction and broaden/deepen relationships with neighboring companies, PJM, ReliabilityFirst, and NERC.

Engineer II Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution (3) a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program. Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 (two) years of Engineering experience is required.
Engineer III Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution (3) a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program. Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 (five) years of Engineering experience is required with a BS in Engineering or minimum of 7 (seven) years of Engineering experience is required with a BS in Engineering Technology.
