Job summary

Vicinity Energy in Cambridge, MA is seeking a Power Plant Technician A to operate, monitor, and maintain plant equipment for safe, reliable, and efficient operation on a rotating shift. The role reports to the Operations Manager and requires Kendall UWUA Local 369 union membership.

This full-time hourly position offers a competitive pay range of $56.07–$67.42 per hour and presents opportunities to contribute to decarbonization efforts across the Boston-Cambridge area and surrounding communities.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Holds and maintains a Massachusetts Third Class Engineers License.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience operating gas turbines, high pressure boilers, steam turbines, and Heat Recover Steam Generators.

Responsibilities

• Operates, monitors, and responds to normal and abnormal operating conditions of power plant equipment and auxiliaries.
• Takes readings and maintains records and logs.
• Records equipment problems on work notifications/requests and documents maintenance actions taken.
• Perform water chemistry analysis and make feeds and adjustments to maintain proper chemical control. Work with water treatment vendor to properly monitor overall chemistry program.
• Operate and regenerate water treatment equipment.
• Reads meters, gauges, or automatic devices to record data such as temperature of equipment, vibration, of equipment, hours of operation, pressure, and fluid levels to verify operating conditions.
• Visually inspects and listens to equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
• Uses facility operating procedures to operate facility equipment and ensure equipment is operated within acceptable parameters.
• Opens and closes valves as required for proper system operation and mechanical isolation.
• Opens and closes circuit breakers up to 480 volts as required for proper system operation and electrical isolation.
• Performs all duties defined in Safety policies and procedures as assigned, not limited to but including lock- out/ tag out of equipment including taking responsibility as Authorized Employee (This includes independent verification).
• Maintain assigned cleaning station
• Understands and complies with all regulatory procedures and facility safety programs. Follow all plant environmental permits.
• Assists other job classifications as assigned when combined cycle major equipment and boilers are not in operation.
• This position works a rotating shift schedule.

Summary

Basic Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrates knowledge of the relationship between plant operations and energy markets.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Ability to read and interpret P& ID’s
• Have a good safety record.

Physical Qualifications

• Must submit to company provided pre-employment physical exam and drug screening.
• Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work outdoors/indoors in all seasons and at times for extended periods.
• Standing, sitting, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, walking on uneven surfaces, and grating, working from elevated platforms, scaffolding or ladders, required to lift up to and including 50 pounds and maneuver up to and including 100 pounds.
• Must qualify to wear a respirator.
• Ability to tolerate confined spaces, including manholes and varying temperatures and weather conditions.
• Exposed to temperature extremes, high noise level areas, high pressure steam lines, rotating equipment, and dusty/dirty environment.
• Required to wear PPE such as hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection.
