Job summary

PowerSecure, Inc. is seeking a Service Technician – Commercial Generators to perform maintenance and repair on generator and power distribution equipment. You will provide technical support on operational aspects and maintain strong customer relationships.

The role requires travel to customer sites, on-site diagnostics, and the ability to read schematics and work with Woodward/Beckwith controls and PLCs. Excellent safety practices and documentation are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required with related military or field experience.
  • 3 years field experience for Level II, 6 years for Level III, 10 years for Level IV.
  • Experience servicing generator systems with 500kW+ capacity preferred.
  • Proficient in preventative maintenance and switch gear work.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Travel daily and work independently at customer sites.
  • Provide 24x7 on-call services as needed.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on contracted equipment.
  • Interact with customers to provide technical support and service.
  • Maintain and safeguard company equipment and tools.

Service Technician – Commercial Generators

Summary

Responsible for ongoing maintenance and repair of contracted and non-contracted generator and power distribution equipment. Additionally, this position is responsible for technical support to customers on operational or maintenance aspects.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Level II Technician: 3 years of field experience servicing generator systems with some experience on 500kw+; proficient.
  • Level III Technician: 6 years of field experience servicing generator systems with extensive experience on 500kw+; proficient with preventative maintenance, paralleling switch gear, ATS repairs, controller retrofits, and loadbanking equipment.
  • Level IV Technician: 10 years of field experience servicing generator systems of all sizes and applications, expert in preventative maintenance, paralleling switch gear, retrofitting advanced controls and loadbanking equipment.
  • Ability to perform triennial maintenance, engine diagnostics, fuel system priming, and replace failed engine components.
  • All candidates require a high school diploma or GED equivalent, related military experience or equivalent field experience.
  • Expert in major engine repairs, able to diagnose a wide variety of applications; experienced with Volvo and PSI engines.
  • Operational and functional understanding of Automatic Transfer Systems, able to troubleshoot and repair with minimal direction.
  • Expert troubleshooting skills; no return call outs for work performed; can be dispatched to any call with help from our Product Support team.
  • Expert at reading or dissecting schematics and wiring diagrams to diagnose most electrical issues; well versed with Woodward, Beckwith, and PLC equipment in an advanced electric controls environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical instructions, safety manuals, service manuals, policies and procedures.
  • Must observe all safety standards.
  • Mentor mid- to high-level techs as requested.

  • Ability to deal with customers where tact may be required to maintain harmonious relationships.
  • Computer fluent, with specific attention to ERP systems, email and Microsoft Office products.

Essential Functions
  • Daily travel with independent work structure.
  • Provide 24x7 “on-call” services as required unless on PTO or off call.
  • Maintain and safeguard company issued equipment, tools, and instruments.
  • Battery installations and replacements.
  • Perform required preventative maintenance service to equipment under contract as scheduled.
  • Customer contact and interface.
  • Communicate availability status to corporate office.
  • Protect company proprietary information, manuals, and records.
  • Use of electronic and electrical test equipment as necessary.
  • Coordinate and manage all on-site subcontractors hired by PSS as necessary.
  • Maintain company vehicle in safe and operational condition.
  • Ensure that work is performed to PSS standards.
  • Complete all paperwork, including Field Service Reports, Time Sheets, Expense Reports, and other job required reports timely and accurately.
  • Provide technical support to customers upon request.
  • Maintain technical documentation for study and/or review.
  • Willing and able to attend training as company deems necessary.
  • Own and maintain personal set of mechanical tools.
  • Cross train in other areas as needed.
Physical Demands
  • Tasks require the regular and sometimes sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Physical activity: 85% on customer site working with equipment, 15% form completion, email, administrative tasks and completing technical support activities by way of telephone and computer communication.
  • May involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials (20-75 pounds).
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. Occasionally required to use hands, to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms.
  • Combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Must have the physical ability to wear PPE, including protective glasses, gloves, and footwear as required.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to read computer screens, paper documents, equipment.
  • Ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
  • Up to 10 consecutive hours driving heavy duty truck.
  • May be required to work long and unpredictable hours.
  • Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and hear others speaking.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background check, drug testing and MVR clearance.
Work Environment
  • Work is 85%+ in an outdoor environment in all types of weather.
  • The environment is varied since the performance of the essential duties is at customer sites.
  • Must be willing to travel out of market/state up to 25% of the time.
  • Requires exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as temperature and noise extremes, vibrations, machinery, hazardous materials, confined spaces, traffic hazards, and various chemicals.
