ABB is seeking a Power Electronics BESS Field Technician – Energy & Carbon to operate across client sites in the United Kingdom and Ireland. You will inspect, diagnose, and maintain BESS, PV, and EV charging systems, providing technical leadership to engineers on site.

You will stay current with grid codes and safety standards, perform commissioning and SAT tests, and collaborate with teams to deliver reliable energy storage solutions.

Qualifications

• Electrical Engineering Degree (or equivalent) required.
• Experience with microgrids, BESS, solar PV, and EV charging is essential.
• Strong knowledge of LV/MV electrical systems and protection schemes.
• Experience with field service and commissioning in energy environments.

Responsabilités

• Lead installation, commissioning, and lifecycle maintenance of integrated microgrid systems.
• Act as on-site SME for power electronics (inverters, converters, transformers, protection/control).
• Drive system integration across PV, BESS, EV charging, and grid interfaces.
• Provide technical leadership and safety training to engineers and technicians.
• Ensure compliance with grid codes and standards; perform diagnostics and maintenance.
• Configure and tune BMS, EMS, and SCADA systems; update firmware.
• Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on BESS, PV, EV, and LV/MV assets.

Service Manager - Energy & Carbon

As a Power Electronics BESS Field Technician – Energy & Carbon, you will be empowered to work across client sites primarily in the United Kingdom and Ireland to conduct assessments, inspections, and complete maintenance on client’s energized assets. You will diagnose, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance services on various electrical systems, primarily BESS systems with PV and EV charging station system opportunities.

Your Role and Responsibilities

In this role,you’llhelp run what runs the world, by taking on meaningful work that drives real impact.

• Lead installation, commissioning, and lifecycle maintenance of integrated microgrid systems across LV/MV networks.
• Act as on-site SME for power electronics (inverters, converters, transformers, protection/control systems).
• Drive system integration across PV, BESS, EV charging, and grid interfaces to ensure interoperability.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and safety training to engineers and field technicians.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of product design, commissioning, and service processes.
• Stay current with grid codes, standards, and emerging technologies in renewables and power electronics.
• Commission and validate MV/LV infrastructure, including switchgear, relays, and grid interconnections.
• Perform SAT, performance validation, and ensure compliance with grid standards (e.g., G99).
• Conduct advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis across electrical and control systems.
• Configure and optimize BMS, EMS, and SCADA systems; perform firmware updates and system tuning.
• Execute preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on BESS, PV, EV, and LV/MV equipment.
• Ensure strict compliance with safety standards, LOTO, permits, and all regulatory and company requirements.

Qualifications for the Role

• Electrical Engineering Degree (or equivalent) with 2+ years’ BESS technician experience.
• Hands-on experience with microgrids, BESS, solar PV, and EV charging systems.
• Strong knowledge of LV/MV electrical systems, protection schemes, and power electronics.
• Proven experience in commissioning, troubleshooting, and field service in complex energy environments.
• Skilled in preventive and corrective maintenance of BESS equipment.
• Proficient in reading electrical schematics, protection studies, and technical documentation.
• Experience with SCADA, EMS, BMS, and data acquisition/monitoring systems.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in mechanical and electrical diagnostics.
• Self-motivated, adaptable, and effective in dynamic field environments with minimal supervision.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to work with clients, vendors, and teams.
• Solid understanding of renewable energy systems, especially energy storage.
• NFPA 70E certification preferred; proficient in Microsoft Office and Windows systems.
