Job summary

EXL Analytics is seeking a Power BI BI developer with 4+ years of experience to build and optimize semantic models and business dashboards. You will transform data using SQL and Databricks, design robust data models, and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver high-impact analytics.

You will work on scalable data pipelines, advanced DAX calculations, and performance tuning to support KPI reporting for insurance analytics. This role emphasizes collaboration and data-driven decision making.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience building Power BI semantic models and business-facing reports/dashboards.
• Strong hands-on experience transforming large/complex datasets with SQL and Databricks.
• Understanding how source data should be transformed and structured to support reporting and analytics.
• Experience with insurance analytics domain is a plus (Life Insurance preferred).

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards for business users.
• Extract, transform, cleanse, and integrate data from multiple sources using SQL and Databricks.
• Design and implement semantic models with fact/dimension structures, relationships, and measures; develop DAX calculations.

Location: Based out of US (NJ/NY Preferred)

Role & Responsibilities Overview:

• Build and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards, selecting appropriate visuals and interaction patterns for business users.
• Extract, transform, cleanse, and integrate data from multiple source systems using SQL and Databricks.
• Design and implement Power BI semantic models, including fact/dimension structures, relationships, hierarchies, and business measures. Develop DAX measures and calculations to support KPIs, metrics, trends, segmentation, and advanced analytical requirements.
• Develop scalable and reusable data transformation pipelines in Databricks to prepare curated datasets for analytics.
• Write complex, optimized SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, aggregation, reconciliation, and data quality validation.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders and BI developers to translate reporting requirements into data and semantic-model requirements.
• Optimize SQL, Databricks transformations, semantic models, and DAX for performance and scalability.
• Support deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of Power BI datasets, reports, and data pipelines.

Candidate Profile:

• Location - Based out of US (NJ/NY Preferred)
• 4+ years demonstrated experience building Power BI semantic models and business-facing reports/dashboards.
• Strong hands on experience manipulating and transforming large/complex datasets using SQL and Databricks.
• Strong understanding of how source data should be transformed and structured to support reporting, analytics, and semantic modeling.
• Ability to balance data engineering considerations with BI/reporting requirements, rather than treating the data layer and reporting layer independently.
• Domain – some experience in Insurance analytics (preferably Life Insurance)
• Bachelors or Master's degree in data science, economics, mathematics, computer science/engineering, operations research or related analytics areas

Technical skills:

• Power BI: Report and dashboard development, semantic modeling, datasets, relationships, hierarchies, calculated measures, filters, drill-through, bookmarks, and interactive visualizations.
• SQL: Advanced SQL, complex joins, CTEs, subqueries, window functions, aggregations, conditional logic, data cleansing, reconciliation, and query optimization.
• DAX: Measures, calculated columns, filter/context manipulation, time intelligence, ranking, aggregation, KPI calculations, and advanced analytical logic.
• Visualization: Selection and design of appropriate Power BI visuals, KPI cards, tables/matrices, charts, slicers, drill-downs, and executive dashboards.
• Databricks: Data transformation, data preparation, notebooks, SQL-based processing, curated/analytics datasets, and performance optimization.
• Data Modeling: Dimensional modeling, star schemas, fact and dimension tables, relationships, cardinality, surrogate/business keys, and model optimization.
• Data Engineering / ETL: Data extraction, transformation, cleansing, integration, validation, and creation of reusable BI-ready data assets.
• Preferred complementary skills: Python/PySpark, Databricks Delta Lake, Git/version control, CI/CD, Power BI deployment practices, and familiarity with cloud data platforms.
