Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Power BI Developer to support a Business Intelligence (BI) program. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Power BI development, DAX, data modeling, semantic models, data integration, report optimization, and Power BI Service.

The Power BI Developer will work closely with business users, data analysts, integration teams, and other stakeholders to gather requirements, design scalable BI solutions, develop interactive dashboards, and ensure reports are accurate, secure, and performant.

Key Responsibilities

Requirements Gathering

• Collaborate with business users and data analysts to understand reporting requirements and business objectives.
• Identify appropriate data sources and attributes required for reporting and analytics.
• Analyze and reverse-engineer existing Excel-based reporting processes.
• Interpret complex formulas, pivot tables, and manual data-analysis processes and convert them into efficient Power BI solutions.
• Recommend improvements to reporting processes, calculations, and business logic.

Data Modeling

• Design and document conceptual, logical, and physical data models.
• Create and optimize relationships between tables.
• Apply data modeling best practices, including appropriate fact and dimension structures.
• Implement Row-Level Security (RLS) and column-level security where required.
• Use Tabular Editor and Best Practice Analyzer to validate and improve Power BI models.

Data Connectivity & Integration

• Connect Power BI to multiple data sources, including:
• SQL databases
• APIs
• Google BigQuery
• Excel
• ArcGIS map and feature layers
• Ensure reliable data extraction and transformation.
• Work with integration teams to identify and follow approved integration patterns.

DAX Development

• Develop advanced DAX calculations.
• Create measures, calculated columns, and other custom calculations.
• Optimize DAX expressions for accuracy and performance.
• Apply appropriate time-intelligence and analytical calculations.
• Design and develop interactive, user-friendly Power BI dashboards and reports.
• Build visualizations, slicers, drill-through functionality, and interactive reporting experiences.
• Develop and utilize ArcGIS and streaming visuals where appropriate.
• Optimize reports and underlying data models for performance.
• Use DAX Studio and Power BI Performance Analyzer to identify and resolve performance issues.

Power BI Service & Deployment

• Publish and manage reports and semantic models in Power BI Service.
• Configure workspaces, permissions, and access controls.
• Support large datasets and optimize report performance.
• Follow organizational source-control and deployment standards.
• Utilize Azure DevOps and version-control processes for Power BI development.

AI & Emerging Technologies

• Utilize AI tools to improve data analysis and reporting workflows.
• Explore opportunities to leverage AI for process optimization and productivity.
• Experience with Google AI tools is a plus.
• Work effectively with business, technical, and cross-functional teams.
• Explain technical concepts and data insights to non-technical stakeholders.
• Lead or participate in requirements-gathering and working sessions.
• Conduct screen-sharing sessions and report demonstrations.
• Participate in backlog discussions and provide status updates.
• Adapt reporting solutions as business requirements evolve.

Required Qualifications

• Experience with Power BI data modeling and semantic models.
• Experience with Power BI Service and report deployment.
• Strong SQL and data analysis skills.
• Experience implementing Row-Level Security.
• Experience working with multiple data sources.
• Experience optimizing Power BI reports and data models.
• Proficiency with Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
• Experience gathering requirements and working directly with business stakeholders.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• Experience with Azure DevOps/version control in a development environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Tabular Editor and Best Practice Analyzer.
• Experience with DAX Studio.
• Google BigQuery experience.
• Streaming datasets and near-real-time reporting experience.
• Experience with AI tools, particularly Google AI technologies.
• Experience working in government or large enterprise BI environments.

Work Location

This position supports remote work; however, the contractor is expected to perform the work within the State of Colorado.

Candidates located in the Denver Metropolitan Area are preferred. Occasional in-person meetings at a State of Colorado office may be required.
